    Re: Wireless Cards

If you're using a desktop PC chances are they're all compatible apart from the PCMCA card ones that are designed for laptops.

That leaves you with 2 choices -

    1) PCI - goes in a slot inside your machine. Great if you've got a spare PCI slot on your motherboard. Easy enough to install and unlike USB dongles you won't lose it.

    2) USB - easier to move from one PC to another. Very easy to install with no messing about inside the machine at all. Uses up a valuable USB port (well, I'm always running out).

Only other thing to consider. Most of them are 64mbps cards now. Many also claim to be 128mbps. A 56mbps card will be able to use that speed between other wireless hardware no matter what. Cards that claim to be 128mbps will only be able to manage 64mbps when transferring data from one make of transmitter/reciever to another.

Having said that, 64 is almost certainly 10x or 20x more than you need.

Jones 23. Hopefully my answer to your duplicate thread in the Software forum helps (add usual statement saying 1 thread is enough, you'll get answers sooner or later).

Any mods want to merge the 2 threads here where it should be.

Erm Edit came too late... Change speeds to 54mbps and 108 (not 64 and 128).

    Thanks. Glad I could help.

I use Netgear, mostly because of the pretty white case... Linksys and D-Link also seem to be good brands.

Buffalo and Belkin seem to have the cheaper end of the market. The reviews I've seen suggested that Buffalo made good hardware with poor software, I avoid Belkin from poor past experiences...
