    Hi there

I'm having problems accessing the internet through a wireless connection, have googled this problem many times today already but the difference with my problem is that while I'm using my windows 7 laptop as a router, the internet problem is with my windows xp desktop...connecting via wireless.

We had a new modem installed on the roof of your house yesterday. Its connected to my laptop via cable, all ok and internet working fine. The technician told us that in order to connect via wireless to our desktop PC in the next room that we need to buy a router.

I wasn't sure about needing a router so managed to set up a ad-hoc connection, set a user name/key. Network is visible on desktop, and says connected on the desktop but I cannot access the internet whatever I do. Have followed various advice, accessed ipconfig...says media disconnected.

I don't really know what I'm doing, do I need to buy a router? I'm not sure if the problem is the laptop, desktop, or the modem settings and having two different OS is just confusing me...
Thanks so much for any help!

    Julie

What make and model is your router? We can give better instructions if we know that.

Is a router the same as a modem? We've had a WIMAX Outdoor CPE HES-319M put outside? But we're being told that we need to buy a router too?

No a modem is not the same as a router. A modem (modulator/demodulator) takes the cable media signal and converts it into an Ethernet media signal.

A router routes TCP/IP (Transmission Control Program/Internet Protocol) packets between networks (WAN to LAN) etc.

Attached is a drawing of what you need. You have the modem you just need the wireless router.

    Hi

Thanks for the responses, had a look at routers today and they're so inexpensive that I guess its our best option..

Thanks for the help anyway, much appreciated!

    Julie,

I am confused by your response. You need a wireless router if you want to run a wireless device to the Internet. You also NEED the modem. I was attempting to show you how to hook up the router you purchase.

    Hi

Yes, I know that I need a modem - that is already installed. My query was did I need a router - I was confused as I could 'see' my wired laptop from the wireless desktop, and was able to 'connect' ...but no internet.

I was unsure if I definitely needed a router. Have bought one today and will install shortly.

    Thanks

    Julie
