    Hello,

I'm using a Sony Vaio VGN-NR280E laptop, running Windows Vista, using a D-Link router, network is not encrypted, and also running Avast! Antivirus. My laptop suddenly can't connect to my wireless network immediately. It takes about 1/2 hour before it connects. But after resuming from suspend, hibernation, or restarting the process just repeats itself.

A little back story: I was out of town for the weekend and was using the wireless at the motel that I was staying at, everything worked fine. I come home and the wireless should, after a minute, connect, instead it just keeps telling me it's not connected. After waiting for about 1/2 an hour the connection works fine and doesn't drop once I am connected. Also, "Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically" are both selected.

    I've tried:

Restarting - have to wait about 1/2 hr or so before I am connected
    Virus check - no viruses
Spy bot check - nothing detected
Drivers - Intel Wireless Driver up-to-date
Wireless Lan switch - On and light is green

It detects the wireless network, but fails to connect. Also diagnosed the issue and came up with "try connecting to another network/troubleshoot when wireless signal is low." The troubleshooting FAQ didn't work. Why is it taking so long to connect to the network now? I'm not very computer saavy so I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

I'd be grateful for your help. Thanks.

have you tried rebooting your modem & router?

    Thanks for replying. :)

No, but I should have done that first. I tried to flush and reset the client resolver cache using the ipconfig command. But that came up with "The requested operation requires elevation."

Next, I kind of jumped the gun. I talked to a Sony representative and they suggested that I remove the dlink network, so I did, and tried to connect again. It changed from unencrypted to security-enabled, then it prompted me for a PW and apparently the PW was not working. So now there is a security-enabled network but the PW doesn't work. I took off the security but still cannot connect even though the signal is excellent.

If I reboot the router back to factory settings, will the router revert back to an unencrypted network? And I can see the dlink network as an option when trying to connect to the internet, but I don't see it under manage network connections. Should I add it in there as well?

I'm going to try resetting the modem and router, and if all else fails, then I'll try a System Restore.

Yes, I see a network but it isn't mines so I can't connect to it. I've deleted all the networks under "Manage network connections" and tried to re-add dlink but it's not cooperating. :confused

Okay... long story. So I allowed a Sony Representative remote access to tinker around with my wireless settings.

    Here's what the analyst did:

    - removed my dlink network from my laptop
    - changed some settings to the router webpage
    - apparently deleted my PC from the router network, because it's no longer listed on the router webpage

Now I can't even access the router webpage wireless settings without getting kicked offline.

The analyst could not configure that out in the settings of the router, so if the router was transmitting any wireless signal, the laptop could not view the network.

It appears that the Router is denying or blocking other network devices to locate it?

I'm not sure what happened, but the analyst opened cmd and tried to change some things in ipconfig and it suddenly kicked my laptop and PC offline. I am only able to connect now by plugging my laptop into the router and resetting it.

On top of that, my PC is unable to access the Internet. Opening a browser results in "Address Not Found". And again, my laptop cannot access wireless. When I try and add a wireless network it just takes me back to "Connect to a network" window. *shrugs*

I don't know what to do at this point.

    - I've reset the modem and router numerous times
    - checked device manager and there are no exclamation marks
    - devices are working properly
    - reinstalled my network connection drivers and network adapter driver via the Sony website.
    - My WLAN light is on, however, lights are not back to normal on router.

It seems I've dug myself in a bigger hole. How do I get my original settings back? Please help :cry
