It seems that I need to go through an elaborate dance every time I power up my laptop and connect to my wireless. Here are the steps (sorry, have not found a matching tune yet):

    1) open the "Wireless network connection status" from tray
    2) select "[view wireless networks] button
    3) notice no networks
    4) push hard button on keyboard (on my GQ 536s) to turn on wireless radio
    5) select '[view wireless networks"] button again
    6) <progress> - I now see the network I want
    7) wait for network to connect
    8) reopen the "Wireless network connection status" from tray
    9) select "support" tab
    a) select "repair"
    b) <sometimes progress> somtimes this will work but
    c) open a cmd tool (from start menu) and
    d) type in ipconfig
    e) ping my wireless router (192.168.1.1)
    f) ping a public site (www.google.com)

This sequence will usually get me on-line, but my wife is not quite so ..er.. patient as I am to get this going.

Question for group: Is there a way to run the "view wireless networks" command from a command window? If so then my app can call this.
Question two: Is there a way to run the "repair" from a command window? I tried all the ipconfig options and they did not seem to work.

I wrote a little windows app to do the ping and can add anything I type into the command window. I just need to know what to type.

    Thanks to all - Pop

    Windows XP or Vista?

I think you'd also be asking, what do I need to do to make my computer immediately recognize a network upon startup? That's what should be happening; you should not have to go through any gyrations to get a wireless connection, assuming your wireless router/modem was on when you turned on your computer.

I've experienced a similar problem and was trying steps you've mentioned. Then, I discovered that my router is apparently the cause of an occasional failure to get a wireless connection upon startup. I found that if I access my router's admin panel via a wired connection from my desktop PC, opened the screen for wireless settings, disabled "radio broadcast", and then re-enabled that, my wireless connection was restored. So, my router (D-Link DI-524) was the cause, not my notebook PC. Perhaps you should investigate the same possibility.

Thanks for the quick reply, usafveteran.

This is an XP box. XP home for that matter. Yes, the router was on when this occurred. I tried looking into the bios settings on the laptop to see if I could always enable the radio, but I did not find anything on the factory installed 802.11 card in my laptop.

The reason I think this is an issues with the laptop is that other laptops connect just fine without this dance. Hmm, Perhaps I should flush the dhcp table and see if that does something.

I am really looking for 2 things
    1) how to have radio enabled on power on (GQ 5361) and
    2) how to programmatic "search for wireless networks" in a cmd window.

Your laptop brand name is Great Quality, right? And, can you verify the model #? You've stated two different #'s. Is it actually GQ ZX-5361 or GQ ZX-5361A? Can you search for a driver update for your network adapter?

So, you regularly have other laptops that connect fine, on the same day you have trouble with this one. Is that right?

it is a GQ ZX-5361. Bought at Fry's about 2 years ago.

Yes, the other laptops connect just fine consistently at the same time that this one has issues. I do not think it is the network driver as once I "do the dance" it works just fine for long periods of time. It could be, however, but I do not think this is likely.

My little app works well, I just want to have it do a little more..

    Thanks - Pop
