I want to hook up a wireless network in my house. I have a desktop and a laptop, but our cable line is not in a convenient location. I'd rather not have the computer where the cable line is. I'm wondering if I can connect the laptop AND the desktop to the internet wirelessly. I do have wireless cards in both computers, but I don't know if I need to have a wired connection with one of the computers or if I could connect both through a wireless router and just have the router and modem where our cable line is. Is this possible, and would I need any additional equipment?

I've recently setup a network similar, I installed a Linksys Wireless G Access Point and three laptops with internal Intel wireless cards.

You can use a Wireless G Access Point OR Wireless G Broadband Router/Switch. They do the same only the Router/Switch has a built in 4 port switch for hard wiring. You don't necessarily have to have one hard wired however you will during configuration.

I prefer Linksys over anything else simply because it's all I've ever used and had very little trouble. You will find out though when dealing with wireless equipment, it's very sensitive and you can buy brand new wireless devices that are bad.

Both units will work fine with most routers/switches. I used a 26 quid router from www.scan.co.uk and it served my desktop and two laptops fine!

    Hi BJGarrick
I am new to wifi networking and I am not sure what equipment is needed.

Are you saying that if the PC and laptop have a wifi card and the adsl router is wifi then this is all you need to both share the internet connection AND share printers and files? i.e. no need for either network cards or secondary wifi equipment?

I am trying to do this in an office and I am having problems. I can share the Internet with any pc or laptop.

The two problems I am having are:
    1. I want to restrict access to the Internet by MAC address but when I try to access the router (using a cable) I cannot connect to it (192.168.n.n) doesn't work.
    2. The PC is XP and the laptop is Vista: I can't get them to share files or printers.

I am not wanting to hijack this post, my question is really the initial question regarding equipment. The other questions are more by way of explaining the circumstances. If I knew I had the correct equipment it would give me some encouragement to carry on trying!

    Thanks
