wireless internet access for LAN

What is necessary to connect a router wirelessly to a shared hotspot. The set up is a 2 computer wired LAN w/ router and an adjacent facility offering us wireless internet access for our nonprofit organization. It would only be used for rare software updates of the single piece of software being used.

Easiest, fastest, cheapest solution? Don't try to attach the router, attach one of the pc's instead. You can buy a usb wireless adapter for a PC for $30.

 

Thanks Handygal. I assume then that I will have access to the Internet from both computers so long as the one with USB wireless adapter in on. Can I do without a router and just interconnect the two wired LAN cards? The cheaper the better for this non-profit thrift shop.

You can share the internet connection, you would need to bridge the wireless and wired. I'm not good at doing that, someone else here can probably walk you through it.

If it's an occasional thing, I would buy one device and install the drivers on it for both. Update one computer, move the device, update the other. That's my lazy solution, bridging would be better for volunteers who come in and out and may not understand.

The configuration that you have now sounds fine. If you wire the computers together you would need a crossover cable instead of a regular cat5 network cable. The way you are setup now you should be ready to add a future third computer or network connected printer.

 

Um or take the wireless adapter and plug it into the other computer
