Every time I connect to one public unsecured wireless internet provider, after a few minutes, my laptop locks up. Keyboard freezes, can't tab between programs or suspend computer, have to shut it off and restart.

I travel with my job and can connect to at least 6 other public wireless sites with out difficulty. I used to be able to connect to the problem site without difficulty. I am running WinXP 3 on my laptop.

Any ideas why I am having this problem and what I might do to correct it?

    Hi

Do you know what provider this Wifi hotspot is?

Do you have any error messages in Event Viewer logs in either System or Application logs at the time of the lockup that may hold a clue as to whats causing this?

If you boot into Safe Mode with Networking I think that works ok with Wifi also, try that and see if the wifi connection doesnt lockup.

    Madcity Brodband:

    http://www.madcitybroadband.com/index.php

From their website: "We design, deploy, operate and manage a municipal wireless network in the City of Madison using Cisco Wireless Mesh Architecture, Wimax and pre-wimax products and advanced monitoring solutions to give residents, businesses and visitors fast, reliable access to the internet throughout the city of Madison as well as enabling municipalities and utilities to use the network for public safety, remote monitoring and network solutions."

I'll need some help to know where to look for the Event Viewer logs in either System or Application logs. Will these still be stored from a couple of weeks ago or have they been erased?

I'll try the Safe Mode with Networking when I am there next Thursday.

    Thanks for your interest, Jim

To can view and export (you could then zip and attach the logs here) the Event Viewer logs, see this article. The logs will contain data from way back unless they've been manually cleared. The View > Filter setting is useful.

It looks like some users of Intel Proset chipset wireless devices have had problems:

    satrow,

I think you nailed my problem. I remember when this first happened I received a warning about needing to update my wireless driver. I have a Fujitsu T4220 Notebook, so I went to their website which said my drivers were current. The latest driver at the Intel website for my chipset is 13.5.0 and I am using 12.0.0.78. I'll update and give this a try on Thursday.

I found how to get to the event view logs, and they are there, but not quite sure how to download so you could read them. Unless someone really wants to see them I am going to pursue the driver update and I'll report back after Thursday.

Thanks so much for your help. I am always amazed at the knowledge base on this website and the willingness to share so freely. I try to pass on what I learn here to help friends who are less computer savvy then me.

    Jim

Fujitsu's updates for your laptop might have stopped 12 months to the day after the last of your model left their factory :( I always try to get updates from the makers of the individual chips/chipsets before looking elsewhere.

Hold off on the Event logs until after you've tested out the new drivers, I'd update them a day or two before you hit the road, it'll give you a little space in case there's a bug.
