Is there a reason why a laptop that runs perfectly well in one "internet hot spot" cafe will not do so in another?

The conection is fine. Five green bars on the scale, but the message is something like

-DNS server not receiving from service-

The message is from memory, second hand, so it might not be accurate. It's my daughter's laptop, and she asked me this over the phone. I'll try and get a more accurate message when she calls again.

The cafe host could not help.

From a network connection the Signal Strength means very little. It just indicates an existing Wireless source.

If the second Hot Spot is configured differently it might not be able o establish a Network Connection.

You have to contact the owner of the Hop Spot and ask for the connetion credentials.

If I tell my daughter to do that, what would she do with the credentials when given. Would she have to change anything that would require changing back later, or is it just a case of adding them to an existing list?

 

Yes she would.

However there is ways to deal with the issue by installing software that allows to easily switch pre-arranged Wireless Profiles.

If she will right click them signal bars and select open connections she will find that signal, it should list that signal and she will have to click on that host and select connect, unless they have it set up with a needed key code, most free spots none is needed. ed
