i am useing a wireless compaq rechargerable mouse and it started not to work after every restart and it would only work if i unpluged it from the usb port and thin put it pack in so i thought maybe it was the mouse so i took it back to radio shack and they gave me another one and it worked fine but like aday latter or so it started the same thing so now i am wondering is there something in xp home that might be causeing this problem the mouse is always within 2feet of receiver (it has a 6foot range so that cant be it.) anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this problem?

Sounds like a driver issue. Have you checked Compaqs website for updated drivers both for the mouse and for the usb port (which would be a motherboard driver)?

Does it play up in Safe Mode?

Have you tried another USB port?

Do you have any errors or exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Does it do this with no other USB devices plugged in?

That's not what I asked you.

These sort of problems are usually only resolved with trial and error or by elimination, unless someone stumbles on the solution.

Well, try a few more times in safemode. If it still works great, then go into msconfig and use slective startup and uncheck load startup items (or you can uncheck everything). If the mouse works, then somewhere you have something that loads up and is causing you issues.

I'll piggyback on this one - my Logitech cordless optical mouse also dies periodically and unplugging and plugging back in the usb plug fixes it (have a keyboard and mouse set and they both stop and start working this way). I looked under Device Manager and I have 10! usb controllers listed. does each usb port have its own controller? Or are these duplicates. My mouse started behaving better but not perfectly when I removed an extra mouse entry in DM. I was actually trying to solve the 10 sec problem - after about 10 sec I have to click a button or move the wheel to get the mouse pointer to respond to movement. Very annoying.
