Wireless network found but not connecting to laptop

I've just added a usb wireless adapter to my laptop. It finds my wireless network but then when click connect (using windows network) it attempts the connection for a few minutes and then fails.

I have previously had a network working with a different adapter but this was a physically a bit fragile and broke.

I'm using a Guru Router GWART2 -54125 (connected to my desktop)and a 3Com Office connect wireless adapter on the laptop. The software with the adapter is the most up to date. I use WPAPSK and the key is correct. I've tried turning off the firewall on my desktop - but not for long. I tried turning off the WAP. I tried turning off the firewall on my laptop. (ZoneAlarm on both).

The result is the same. The adapter finds the network but does not connect. Please any help.

I've also got the same problem... Trys to connect for a minute or so then nothing!!

 

Do you have mac address filtering enabled in your router configurations as well as WPA?

If so your new adapters addy will be different to the old one!

Try first without security.

If it works, configure again the security (WAP) start with the Router.

Enter (or generates) Hex key and copy the string to the Wireless Client. I.e. do not use the passphrase in the Wireless card.

Why? Hardware from different manufacturers might generate different Hex string even when using the same Passphrase. To function the Wireless hardware actually is using the HEX string, the Passphrase is just an easy tool the generate a Hex string.
