Wireless Network issue

Dell Inspiron E5105
OS: Windows XP SP3

My internal wireless card was not working and I started using External USB wireless adaptor. Even that broke few weeks back and I replace the internal wireless card with Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLA N Mini-Card. The 'wiFi' light is on but no connectivity. Drivers were installed successfully.

Seems you have a problem as windows has not detected the gateway correctly and as such has also given an incorrect IP address for your client pc (on the LAN).

It is my understanding that XP gives out the 169.254.139.198 IP address (& gateway) when confused. Perhaps you should enter the gateway and client address manually and see how that fares.

EDIT: The Subnet Mask is also incorrect, should be 255.255.255.0

Tick Use the following IP address

1. Enter your LAN IP address. This will depend on the gateway's IP address and the range of IP addresses that you have assigned.
Example. If you gateway IP address is 192.168.0.1 and the IP range is 192.168.0.2-100, the top entry will be say 192.168.0.2.

2. Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

3. Default gateway, what your gateway IP address for the LAN ie 192.168.0.1

Tick Use the following DNS server addresses

Under Preferred DNS enter your gateway's LAN IP address ie 192.168.0.1

See how you fare with that, I think that will work

Don't forget to reboot your pc and might also be an idea to reboot the gateway ie router

I changed the settings as suggested:
1.
IP Address: 192.168.2.8 (as the range on router is from 192.168.2.2 to 100)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1

For DNS Server Address I used the list from Belkin Router settings- WAN> DNS

Primary DNS Adress: 68.87.76.182
Secondary DNS Address: 68.87.78.134

2. Rebooted Router
3. Rebooted Laptop
Still no luck !!:cry The IP config all values still show the XP default values 169.254.139.198 and subnet 255.255.0.0.

What I would suggest is as follows.

1. Disable the wireless card
2. Connect the laptop to the router via hard wire (your lappy must have an nic port)
3. As regards the DNS settings, put the IP address of the gateway in Primary DNS ie 192.168.2.1. Leave the secondary DNS blank.

That should work. Once you have established a link, then disconnect nic cable reboot and re-enable the wifi and try.

The 169.254.139.198 IP problem is a common one, I have had it before trying to connect homeplugs.

I tried the steps you have suggested. I can now connect to internet via my nic port (which was not possible before). No luck with Wireless yet. Below are my settings and the values for ipconfig.

Ok. As regards the wireless side and for clarity are you trying to connect by way of using XP's wireless software ie wireless zero configuration or through the wifi's card software ie Intel software.

It does not matter which software as long as I can connect to wireless. I have disabled the Dell Utility. Is there anything more that I need to do?

Just making sure that you were using either one or the other as having both on at the same time is a common mistake and leads to issues.

With the wifi card enabled, have you in the first instance tried pinging the gateway. Open command/dos box and at the prompt type ping 192.168.2.1

If that works then type ping majorgeeks.com and see if that works.

If not what I would do is ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew at the dos prompt and reboot.

Also check within your router that the laptop has been detected and if required accepted as a new wireless client, in case you have MAC addressing or encryption ie WEP, WPA enabled.

The wireless card seems to have the correct info now (apart from the IP address ending in .44 but that IP is within the DHCP IP range of the router so should be ok.

 

Have you tried to reset you windows wireless zero service? Start/run/ type in : services.msc , find Windows wireless zero and right click, click restart and give that a shot.
