    First post. Hi all!

Been trying to fix a laptop for a friend the past week & it's driven me nuts. It had no internet connection due to winsock corruption but no matter what i did i couldn't get the headings down to 10 in msinfo32 -> Components -> Network -> Protocol.

Gave up & reinstalled a new XP Media Centre OS profile from the installation cd so that it gives them the option of using the old OS profile to use files & new one for internet access. After installing the drivers I'm now getting a yellow question mark in Device Manager beside Other devices & yellow question mark with a yellow exclamation mark inside it beside the following:

    Base System Device

    Base System Device

    Base System Device

    PCI Device

    SM Bus Controller

    Video Controller

    Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

When i check msinfo32 -> Components -> Network -> Protocol i'm getting 16 headings, including MSAFD Pgm (Stream) & MSAFD Pgm (RDM). In regedit, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-> System -> ControlSet001 -> winsock ->Transport i'm seeing something called RMCAST.

    Here's my HijackThis log file:

If you look at your HJT log:
You need to go to the manufacturers website and download the drivers.

    Hi and welcome to MG's,

please could you run everest ..... http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next
Choose System Summary Only > Next
Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report, then click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop is best as easy place to find it, use Browse to locate desktop)

Add the report in your next post like this.....

this will help in getting the correct sofware/drivers for the laptop, also if the laptop has a service tag# can i have it (this is usaully found under the Ram expansion slot).

Many thanks for the sqift response. Much appreciated.

Noticed the 'file missing' errors. I already installed the drivers but it stored them in a different location. Should I re-install them to the directory stated in the HijackThis report?

    & here's the Everest report:

I have to go now as it is late, but I will get straight onto this first thing tomorrow morning, in the mean time if you have found the service tag# for the laptop then go here...

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...abIndex=&scanSupported=True&scanConsent=False

and where it says "Dell Recommends" click on "enter service tag" this will give you the drivers/software that are unique to that machine. Like i said I will check in the morning and any issues you are still having I will get onto them for you.

Updated all the drivers directly from Dell. Now getting 'limited or no connectivity'.

Attached are the reports from Everest & HiJackThis. The everest_all.txt file is the result of an 'All pages' scan for good measure.

    Thanks again for the correspondence.

Ok, Great to hear that you have sorted the driver issue out. The limited or no connectivity could be down to your router, try powering it off then on and see if you can connect.

The driver issue is still not sorted, though. In Device Manager I'm still getting six yellow question marks with an exclamation mark beside it under Other Devices:

    Base System Device

    Base System Device

    Base System Device

    SM Bus Controller

    Video Controller

    Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

PCI Device is gone from the list, though.

Just turned the router on & off there & it can surf again. Yay! Presumed that because a few other computers are connected to the router that it wouldn't make any difference restarting it. How wrong I was.

Still have the issue with Other Devices & also when I try to 'View Available Wireless Networks' nothing is showing on the list.
