I've been reading up on lots of stuff on this but come away not knowing which is the best choice ... encryption or mmac address? There are many other options too.

I've got the pc on the wireless 801.11g 4 port and the laptop on a wireless access point, same brand same type. I don't live in a highly populated area so I'm not concerned about drivebys. Based on your experience, what works best for you?

    There is No best.

You have to use your judgement according to your situation.

    Already been there.

...What's up with the large font? Are you shouting at me?

use the mac address method. This prevents the AP from accepting any connection other than the mac address of your laptop. Then turn off SSID broadcast and your network will practically disappear from the public. Just to be on the safe side you could also turn on wep, and make the system secure as wireless can be.

    WEP config

I had WEP on for the laptop but couldn't find it on the desktop net config. screens
(WinXP-*H) wishin I had *Pro). I'll tunnel down through the screens again.

    Much obliged Fw190..! ;)

    No,

I usually cut and paste into the post box. These fonts drive me crazy.

I any case the WEP has nothing to do with WinXP or any windows it is a function of the Wireless Card and Router/Access Point.

    WEP - cuts out sharing

Hmmm.. well, klew me in then. If there's anything I've learned so far about networking, settings have to be equal for sharing and I supposed the same would apply to security issues. If I set WEP on the laptp, my internet sharing keeps cutting out.

To get rid of the BIG FONT 1 way/how2

I'm assuming you have "wysiwyg" selected for your email format in your cp settings)
Select the text and select 2, third selection on the toolbar on the top of the reply screen.
Also,, If you use the quick reply, used advanced or use the "quote" reply option and doctor it up through that screen.

I tried installing/running AirSnare but to no avail. The program acts as if it is going to start, then it disappears.

    AirSnare wouldn't load... missing dlls

I got a runtime error and AirSnare would not load.

<<Failed to load winpcap packet.dll. Please (re)install the winpcap packet capture libraries.>> Where do I find them? ... or, to keep it simple ...

Should I uninstall through windows and start all over?

A graphic view of Wireless Network Security

Found this on the HP Technical Doc site.
Good info and provides a "graphical" view of the 3 main types of wireless net sec.
    Some might find it useful.
(waiting for Major Attitude to take a *stab at that one) ;)

Close xflat, but I think it's wireless encryption protocol.... :p

I run both MAC and 128 bit WEP, you can never be too paranoid ;)
