    Hi,

I set up my neighbour’s wireless connection a few years ago and it has been working fine. While trying to set up an iPod she pressed the reset button on the router and has now lost the connection. She only has one desktop computer and is using it wirelessly as it is in another room from the telephone socket. She has a Netgear WG834G V3 router and is running XP SP3 with a wireless adaptor.

I have moved the desktop to the router, connected the Ethernet cable and tried to set it up again to no avail and I cannot remember how I did it last time. When I try to use the setup wizard in XP I cannot get past the section where you have to plug the flash card into the router as the router has no USB port and when I make the manual selection I get an error message. I have tried going into the router and setting it up manually but still cannot get connected. The wireless window says “connected” and the “disconnect” button at the bottom is available, but it also says “not connected”. Could this be because it is set to connect automatically, but is using the old password, which my neighbour has forgotten?

I would appreciate a step by step guide to clear the current wireless settings in the router set up the router manually then delete the old wireless connection from XP and reconnect. If the router is set up manually I don’t believe I need the XP wizard. I should be able to search and find the connection then enter the passkey from the router and set it to connect automatically.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Axel

If you can press the reset to factory button, you can begin with a clean slate without worrying about pass words + passphrases etc.
There are two ways to do this. The first is with a paperclip tip which you insert in the router usually underneath.
If this fails and you can log on, I can tell you where the reset button is in the router - address bar - 198.162.1.1. Type admin where it says admin and the password where it says to, or, put the old password in.
This should allow you to set up with or with out the wizard.
If you cannot access the router this way because you forgot the password and cannot reset manually with the paperclip, perhaps someone else can jump in.
If you can access the router, write again and i will do my best to help set up.

It is going to depend on the ISP. Something like AT&T DSL will require a user name and password to get access on to the DSL again.

What is the ISP and we can direct you to the step by step from there.

    >>I have used Ntegear routers for ten years and the good folks here will get you set up - it is easy. I will drop in little tips if I am needed.
