i have a compaq laptop with wireless built in and t was able to find and connect to my wireless at home and the other day i was able to see my wireless network but unable to connect or seem to get any response from it whatsoever ie: did not even show "limited or no connectivity". i share wireless with 1 other person in my house and they are able to connect so i have ruled out the modem/router as a problem. i have tried unplugging the modem to reset it with no luck. i am able to use my wireless and connect fine on campus so it is obviously not my wireless card and i can also connect to my router through a cable. please help me, thank you

When you say you saw the wireless connection, what exactly do you mean?
    Saw it where?
What OS are you using (XP, Vista, 98)?

OK what happens when you try to connect?

it looks like it is going to connect and then just keeps trying to connect to the network and if u let it finish it will eventually say something about being able to connect and the reason is could not connect to the wireless network

Do you have an Inventel router from

    (Orange or Wanadoo)?

actually I think it's Invensys sorry.

i'm not sure what that is but my router is linksys

If you had one of these routers I would say to press the pairing button, but this does not apply to Linksys.

Have another look at Jack's post and compare your settings with the ones in his links.

What is your connection signal strength?
Does it say it is "Aquiring Network Address"?

(These are 2 of my neighbors networks that barely reach me)

i pick up 1 or 2 several secure networks that are not mine, but mine says not connected and the signal strength is full

The fact that you are recieving a strong signal but unable to connect would suggest that (as Cat5e said) it is a configuration problem.
Have you followed the links that Cat5e suplied and tried their solutions?

    Particularly this one

i read the website, and am not sure i completely understand what to do. i was able to pick up a random unsecured wireless network at my house with a very very low signal and was able to barely connect to it. also the laptop i am using is only a year old. just a little more information.

i have read through the configuration website, although i have not had a chance to sit down and try it. but i had a question, would there be any reason my roommate would be able to connect perfectly fine to our network and i could not at all? thank you for your help thus far

    A perfectly logical question.
Perhaps if you checked with your roommate to see if they had WCZ enabled or not and set your system to the same setting.

Going to the configuration settings of your router is still a good idea. Look for any security settings there that might be blocking you.

i have tried to turn off WZC and it did not work, also by configuring the wireless isn't that basically resetting it?

Is this a Vista machine ?
I had a problem with one of the laptop Vista computers on our church network a couple of months ago that was very similar to what you're experiencing.
That laptop wouldn't connect to our wireless network even though it was showing a strong signal and no other machine was having problems.
If I remember correctly I corrected the problem by going into the security settings of Vista, but I can't recall the details.

One last thing I would check
In your wireless Network Connection Properties click on "Advanced" and make sure your setting are to accept any available network

    Try this

    start>connect to>show all connections
right click the wireless connections icon
in the left pane click 'change the advanced settings'
    click the wireless networks tab
tick 'use windows to configure my network settings'
if your router is not in the list of preferred networks click add
If it is select it and choose properties
The next screen is the same either way
make sure your routter is shown in the SSID box
I assume you are using a key so set network authentication to shared
If no key set NA to open
set data encryption to WEP/WPA etc
    enter network key twice
make sure 'this key is provided automatically' is not ticked
tick this is a computer...adhoc network.

    click OK twice

    What happens now?

Hi, I'm having the very same problem. Well, I can connect if I reboot the router but then the connection will cut off even though I have a strong signal. I have Vista Home Premium on an HP laptop and a dlink router. I reboot the router - I connect to the internet - I'm OK for an hour or 5 hours or 5 minutes - I get a 'Limited Connectivity - Local connection only', followed by no connection. If I try to reconnect I get 'No wireless networks are available'. I don't know what to do. I also tried to connect to two friends wireless. One I couldn't get on the Internet at all although I was connected to the router and the other worked perfectly for an hour but I had to leave. Any advice would be much appreciated. (I can connect no problem with a LAN cable)

It is best to start this in a new thread.
Especially once the original poster has declared their problem solved.
It was only by chance that I looked into this thread and saw your post.
