Ive got a netgear DG834G v3 router, this might be a stupid question but can i use the router to scan for networks as well as transmit if you know what i mean. As in can i use it to log on to my neighbours network for example?? If so How?? Can it be used the same way as a wireless card??:confused

your router will pick up any networks within its range but to log on to those is theft and certainly not condoned here.

I understand completely dont get me wrong this is strictly legit!!!! Scenario is my brother-in-law has a wireless network set up and lives a couple of doors down from me, he hardly uses his connection and has gave me permission to use it. So the reason i ask is how do i use my router to log on to his connection without buying a wireless card?? Do i need a program or do i have everything???

i don't understand why you need his ISP as you are obviously on the the net now to be able to post here??

if you right click the small task bar icon for your signal it will open a pop up that will say view available networks click that and wait, it will then display the networks that are within range of your router if the one you are looking for is displayed and you can identify it by the name E.G DLinkfred then click connect it should ask for the password if you have it from your brother in law type it in and click connect if everything is OK your connected and a yellow star should appear next to his network and say connected.

that was my problem receiving internet through wireless with the router. Sorry i should have been a bit clearer. My pc is connected to the internet via ethernet to the router. Yes im on the net now but if i can use my router to log onto his isp i can cancel mine and save £30 a month. So my original question should have been can i recieve internet through wireless with my router?

I bow to the knowledge of Studiot who has far more tech ability than me and he suggests that your router will not receive wireless so it looks as if you are not able to use it for what you require.

taz229's DG834G v3 router has nothing to do with what he wants to do. He's asking about getting a wireless Internet connection from his brother-in-law's wireless network. BILLMCC66 was on the right track in his second reply. taz229's hardware must be able to receive an adequate wireless signal from his brother-in-law's wireless network. If the signal is too weak, perhaps a signal booster could be added to this scenario.

If the brother-in-law has his wireless security enabled in his router, such as WEP or WPA, taz229 will need to configure his computer for the same type of security and setup the password, the same password used by his brother-in-law.

I did overlook that point. But ...
... I see nothing in the link you posted that indicates he can use his wireless router to receive a wireless signal from another wireless router. I don't believe that can be done. So, he'll need to a wireless card/adpater for his computer.
