I have had the same setup for about 2 years and everything has been working fine up until yesterday. Now my set up is simple, I have two computers 1 laptop and one desktop both are hooked to a LinkSys Router (WRT54GL).

The laptop connects wirelessly while the desktop connects directly. Upon doing my normal routine I came home and went to browse on the laptop and saw that all sites immediately time out. So I thought it was an explorer issue then I tried it in firefox and the same thing happened. It gives this error saying "there may be no connection to the internet" or "the site is unavailable". So I connected to the router through the browser and tried to reset it. After doing that I was still at square 1. So I reset the router itself, unplugging the power and the modem then hooking them back up.

The desktop at this time was experiencing similar issues. Then it started working only on the desktop. I even tried hooking the modem up directly to the desktop just to make sure it wasn't my isp.

So my desktop was now fine despite showing the same type of problems.

Now heres where my laptop gets really pyscho! Im using AOL and some how my laptop gets an IP from my router and it says its connected to the internet. It looks like everything is fine. But when I go to ping the router it cannot and when I ping it's own IP address the times are sporadic as far as a response goes . The seconds for each response time goes up and down.

And now when I try to get into the router through the browser that times out as well. Its like the router is blocking my laptop yet assigning it an IP address.

Anyways, just to give some background on the laptop, recently the fan started to die and I know thats due for a change but I didn't think that would affect the network card or anything. I hope someone can help cause its frustrating be signing on to AOL and my browser looking at me funny lol.

Just so you know I tested to see if maybe the router's wireless functions weren't working but I doubt thats the case because my Xbox picks up the wireless connection as it has always down just fine. And my laptop says the signal strength is strong.

If I could just get some ideas on what it means with the my not being able to ping the router and the difference in times maybe that can help me to start to fix this issue.

Usually laptops have but one fan, coincidentally it cools the processor. If your fan is going, that processor will take all of about 5 sec. to over heat. Might that be it? An overheating CPU will make the computer act real squirlly. That doesn't explain the similar problems on the desktop. Have you scanned for trojans, BHO's, adware, loggers, viruses?
