    Hi,

Looking for some assistance in installing a Belkin wireless Router. My current setup is a desktop with a Comcast Cable Modem. I bought a laptop for Christmas and am having one heck of a time.

Im not the most technically proficient, and Belkin's support while seemingly smart, was difficult to understand. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

    Hi

Easiest thing to do is this:

Connect the cable modem to the router with an ethernet cord (the "fat phone cord looking thing"), it will go into the plug port on the router NOT grouped with the other plugs.

Then, using any of the other ports on the router, connect an ethernet cord from that to your laptop.

Then, on your laptop, type "192.168.1.1" (without the quotes) into your browser in the place where you would type a website address (i.e. www.google.com) and hit the Enter button.

This will access the router settings, it will probably prompt you for a username and password, use the default (should be admin for both or just the password, if not Google for your router's default login).

Then, go to the wireless settings, make sure to select an encryption (WPA2 is good). You will need to set a passkey, which is a password used for the wireless connection. Be sure to write this key down, as you will need it to connect wirelessly with the laptop.

Once you have setup the wireless, disconnect the ethernet cord from between your laptop and the router, and right click the connection icon at the bottom left of the screen, it will show the router and connect using the wireless key you setup on the router.

Any questions regarding any of that, please ask.

Ok. When Im typing in 192.168.1.1 on the laptop its telling me that its not recognizing that page. However before I got flustered with Belkin's cust. service they gave me the similar 192.68.2.1 which routes me to a Belkin site . I tried going there. Im assuming that would be the step you describe as

This will access the router settings, it will probably prompt you for a username and password, use the default (should be admin for both or just the password, if not Google for your router's default login).

I selected the option of logging in and did so by just clicking submit. However, Im really unsure of where exactly to go from there to access this What you described as ) Then, go to the wireless settings

NEVER access a router's setup with a wireless device! It is too insecure. Use your wired desktop to change the settings. You will be able to use your laptop wirelessly after the router is properly set up.

The first thing you want to do (remember you are doing this from a wired computer) is to change the default login. WRITE down the username and pass you have chosen! Your chances of forgetting any decent password are high.

After I know your model and can peek at a manual online, I will explain what other settings need to be changed and what you are doing as you change things.

Ok. I see the manual you posted however, that all pretty much greek to me. . At this point Im only as far as plugging the ethernet cord into my laptop and the router, and the modem 's (phone jack type cord into the router.

From there I can access a belkin page on the laptop, but im not really too sure from there as to what link I have to click or select.

Sorry if this seems dumb of me, but Im just looking for help/

Have you run the setup CD on your desktop? That's the first thing to do.

Next you can access the router setup by launching your browser and typing either of these two items into the address bar:
    http://router
    192.168.2.1

Then make sure the wireless chip is turned on in your laptop.
Make sure the topmost light is solid green on your router.
    1. locate wireless-network-connection on your laptop
    2. select Belkin router (you'll see the SSID that is on the card provided with your router) or if you changed it, you will see this username
    3. eneter your password; the manual says the wireless device will take a few moments to connect.

Ok I'm this far, however, when the laptop detects the router, I selct to connect to it, and it asks for a Security Key, what do I type in ?

This may be issue where Im going wrong, because when I run the Belkin setup, i get to the point where I type the SSID and the Passcode on the bottom of the router and rather than connecting me, it says to call belkin.

When I had Belkin on the line, they were telling me something may have been out of date. Not sure exactly what ..

    I appreciate all the help.

    Thanks

    Hi..

Wondering if anyone can take a look my last post on this, and determine where I am going wrong.

    Thanks

Call Belkin back and find out exactly what is out of date. You need tp set it up properly on your desktop before you worry about the laptop.

When you call Belkin, ask support for other SSids and Passcodes to try. Since the ones given on the card do not work, we need to know what other choices there are, rather than guessing and hoping you hit the correct combo. We could spend a long time just trying to get into the router setup.

Also ask what security is on the router. It might be WPA2.
