wireless router

bought a wireless router so i can use my laptop anywhere in the house , the problem is that after i connect my cable modem to the router it doent connect to internet , basically there is nothing coming out of router , been on the phone with the tech support and after all there trouble shooting told me that my modem will not support my router . tried to find updates for modem but havent had any luck. does this sound normal or do the tech people just not know how to fix problem ?

I find it hard to believe that "Linksys" of all people, wouldn't have support for a motorola modem!! Unless it is really old!! I am assuming that you are running broadband?? Have you checked the firmware on the modem and the router to see if it is the latest, and if not...update the firmware and then try again!!

have you reset your modem? this can be done in two ways... uplug it from everything(power plug, router, cable) ... wait 10-20 seconds and plug it back in ... or you can call your cable company and ask them to reset it manually (you talked to linksys and not your cable company correct?)

also, can you ping your router? or access the router via it's IP address? when you do you should get a configuration page within your web browser ... the instructions that came with your router should tell you how to do this

 

I have reset , updated and talked to both cable company techs and lynksys the modem is about 2 years old I really couldnt find any new firmware for it but did find some for the router , think I am going to return it and buy a modem , router all in one

 

Don't mean to spend your money, but......yeah!!

Intergrated solutions are generally less of a P.I.T.A. You don't have these compatibility problems.

If you're dead set on getting a new one, we'll stop trying to help with this problem, but if not ... I'm sure we can work on this a little more if you so desired

 

bought new modem desktop works great laptop went online , and was looking at internet pages then signal was lost , am sitting about 2 feet from wireless router the toolbar icon says that I am connected excellent strenght but I cant get online , ei says server not found

 

On the notebook right click the wireless icon and select status then click the tab that says support. that page should show you the notebooks Ip address and the routers address which is under the default Gateway heading if you have no Ip address here close all that out right click icon again and selest repair. See if that helps

 

tried that info on last post still no internet , the icon shows to be connected with excellent strength anymore ideas will be greatly appreciated , I dont want to call linksys again for all they do is change settings then when it still doesnt work they tell me its a bad router , this is my third one

 

If you are using Internet explorer go tools click internet options delete temp files and all cookies then go to file and make sure there is no check mark by work offline

tried that still nothing , plugged ethernet wire into laptop went on line with no problem but still cant go wireless

 

do you have the wired port disabled while you are using the wireless card

 

no I didnt change anything like that but it went online the other night for about 5 mins so I figure it should still work , but now when I run my cable thru router desktop will not go online . I am about ready to just return router , new modem and laptop and just forget whole thing .

 

now I cant even run the ethernet from modem and go online with laptop

 

Shotgun troubleshooting isn't going to fix this, lets get some info about what we have first.


Please give us:

Your IP address, both connected via ethernet and wifi.
Your default gateway.

Can you get to your router settings page? What does it show for the WAN/Internet IP address? (its on your status page, the manual can be found here: http://media-server.amazon.com/media/mole/MANUAL000000300.pdf)

Do you have Service Pack 2?
