    Greetings Geeks -

I was looking into adjusting the placement of my home wireless router. As a result, I was thinking about converting my desktop into wireless. The current setup has my cable entering the house into my family room running behind the baseboard for about thirty feet into my cable router and then into the router.

Would it be possible to move the router to the point at which the cable enters the house along with the cable modem and convert the desktop into wireless? If so, is it advisable to convert a desktop to wireless or would there be too many issues?

For some context, my provider is Comcast, and I have great connectivity. Downloads over 20megs/sec and uploads I believe are at 8megs\sec. My current wireless works great as well - I use it for all manner of devices; tablets, streaming video, phones, etc.

I would like to move the router to a better location so the signal is better distributed throughout the house, maybe even a ways out to the backyard. Any suggestions there?

    Thanks for any help!

As far as converting your desktop to wireless, if you have an available PCI slot in the computer you should be able to install a PCI WLAN card. ;)

I've got TWC and your UL/DL speeds are nearly 10X mine! WOW!

I wouldn't recommend moving the router out into the back yard what with precipitation and all. :)

You should have at minimum one wired computer attached to a router. The wired computer is the one that you do all the router settings. Turn off remote management. That means if anyone manages to break into your network on a wireless signal, they could reset the SSID and password and lock you out of your own network.
No need to open a desktop to go wireless. I had two desktops in the basement with linksys USB wifi dongles that had no problem using the router upstairs.
