In my appartment building there is a network.
    A wireless network. It's on 802.11b.
I purchased a D-Link 802.11b wireless card, so I could be on the network.
My roommate can't get us on the network.
Let me play with it for a minute.
    (20 min. later...)
Yippee, I'm on the network. This is fast! Hooah, look at it go.
Roommate: "Hey, enable internet connection sharing so we can play on live."
Me: "Hmmmm, I'm not sure how to do that on WINME.
    Roommate: Here, I'll do it.
Now at this point in my sad sad story, I should have taken a moment to think about this. Here is my roommate, he wants to help. He has been trying to get on the network for 2 hours. Maybe I should just try to figure out the internet connection sharing myself. But no.
Here he goes, click this, click that, shouldn't you be there, not here.
Then the fateful message...."You must restart your computer for the changes to take effect". And so he did.
Now we're still on the network mind you, it's just slower than dial-up. Like it's not talking with the appartment network, or they are having issues.
I'm not a total noob, but I'm not a genius either.
Sysytem restore didn't work, and I have half a mind to format C: and start over. But before I do, I thought I would consult fellow Geeks (hooah). So if anyone can help, it would be appreciated. If not, pull out the HP system restore disk boys, and let him have it!
    P.S. I don't have a windows ME install disk.

Now that DSL is available in the sticks where I live, I am trying to get out of my contract with wireless T1. I feel your pain.

I have a screenshot and ping tests showing my pings (with 1472 bytes of data) averaging 600-700ms to the tower and DNS server.

On dial up, that same test would be ~200ms.

I have a screenshot showing 500k down, and brace yourself, 83k up.

I have at a different time the same tests average 20-50ms to the tower and dns server, and a screenshot with 1.2mbit down and 700k+ up.

I am supposed to be getting 1.5/1.5.

Now take into the consideration the spikes I am getting, and throw internet connection sharing into the mix, which effectively halves your bandwidth.

I could easily see you getting worse than 56k speeds if the tower is overloaded like mine is.

But the T1 comes into the building hard line. It only splits off in the server room to the 802.11 transmitters in the hallways.
So 3.0/3.0 split on 802.11b should last a long time before it gets bogged down to a snails pace. And eveything worked fine until we tried to enable internet connection sharing, which I don't think we even did. Then the restart.
Now my grandma could draw the Yahoo homepage faster than it loads.

I had a simmilar problem with my wirless internet my bandwidth is supposed to be 512 kbps. but for somereason it went down to around 3 kbps. It seems like a setting was messed with, maybe the TCP/IP settings are messed up. Here is a link that might be of some assistance
    download the first link there.
    http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

an other good way to test your intenet connection and other areas on your PC is to go here http://pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/pitstop.asp go down and hit lets go and ok

    download the first link there.
you will have to put in your own settings and that should fix it. By the way to enable or disable file sharing in ME http://www.cablemodemhelp.com/winmesec.htm

I wouldn't recommend that you go back to Windows ME, because it was slapped together and has many problems, and just do the full installation to Windows XP home.
    Hope this might help some

Thanks Astroman. First bit of useful info yet.
