I had an interview yesterday for a software developer position with a company named Mindplay. They make educational software for reading improvement.

It was a 90 minute interview! Hopefully I will get it but I won't hear back for 1.5-2 weeks.

Good luck in being successful in this interview Jeremy and 90mins, we tend to have 30-45 min ones here with a presentation taking 10mins or so up, but I know some jobs have much longer interview times and multiple interviews, they whittle down the initial group and invite the successful ones to a 2nd interview to narrow that group down again.

So how do you think it went, interviewer/s seem positive to your answers and any questions you had for them?

Did they do as we do sneak in a curveball question? weird one here was if you could be a medical instrument, what one would it be and why?.... left field or what.

  21. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Yeah, they threw me a curveball with asking me to code a method to give a way to solve the fibonacci sequence for any given position. That was the only place I really kinda screwed up a bit. The interviewer said it wasn't really fair because I had never seen recursion before. Of course, ignorance is no excuse, so I don't think that was a freebie.

I thought I did fairly well, and I spent a lot of time asking questions and engaging my interviewer in discussion to show interest, but one question I gave to him was, "how do you think I will do here? I am very interested in the position." To which he said he thought I was more suited for automation testing or QA. Which made me die a little inside.

He said it depends on how the other interviews go. I was the first. If I did the best, I have the job. They haven't ruled me out yet.

  22. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Well, those questions are in general to see what process you would take or your answer and in the main doesn't really matter if you mess up, so long as you had a plan.

Yeah that's a bit of a heart in mouth moment when the interviewer said that, but well you cannot always have similar workers in a company, need a mix and if they think you can adapt to different tasks then an employer gains a multidisciplinary worker, this is how I want us to go in work.

Will they let you know one way of the other?

I wish you well, Fingers X'd

He said they would let me know either way but I probably won't know until the end of this week or sometime next week.

Good luck, and like David said usually they throw curveball questions at you to gauge your problem solving abilities. It's not necessarily whether or not you solved it, it's how you performed solving a new problem. They probably ask the "Fibonacci Question" because it's highly likely it's something most people being interviewed haven't had any exposure to.

But then again, I could be mistaken.

    Got my feedback :(

Interview went well and the interviewer had positive things to say about me. Because I had a QA job in the past, he felt I had too much of a QA background than direct software development. I am so sad :(

I only took the QA job so I can work my way into software development. Talk about a huge doh!

I'm running out of jobs to apply for. This has to be the 40th one I've applied for so far. I am thinking about starting my own business but I really didn't want that kind of burden.

Sorry to hear that news Jeremy :(

There are some positives to take form this and the feedback in parts sounded good as you say the interview went well from the comments, I would have thought a QA background would be a good thing in software dev.

Don't give up hope yet, keep sending Resume's out and keep developing your site and get more into on your LinkedIn page (oh must add you as a contact to mine) optimizing it was on a TV program for getting more views from prospective employers.

Even if companies locally are not advertising, still send in your resume or even turn up at the door in a suit and say something like "goodmorning/afternoon I know you are not advertising at present, I was passing and would like to hand in my resume to you for your perusal as I'm a software developer who has skill you may need" or something similar.

Chin up mate, something will come along just keep website developing and programming neat tools, keep up on the forum as even helping folk shows you are adaptable

Thanks you two. I'm just so frustrated! I know the economy isn't hot, but IT is supposed to be an employee market. My recruiter told me months ago that I could afford to be picky. Guess she was wrong.

TBH Jeremy, I think companies are still weary of taking on staff.

You are right it should be a quick inroad into IT (even in my medical research) but at times companies baulk and cannot decide on anyone at first, I've known us to not pick anyone from 1st job applicants interviews to then re-advertise a month later and interview again and take on someone we had already seen.

Thing is and I know its hard to say easily so its not an off the cuff remark is really don't get despondent, smile and get yourself out there, and even volunteer at a local seniors PC group if you have time, just a few hours a week is good, plus looks really good on a Resume, also never know who you are networking with, could be parents of a CEO.

Well, crap. I'm sorry. :( I would've also thought that a job in QA would have been a bonus rather than a count against you. At least they took the time to tell you personally, I guess. Job hunting sucks...especially with so many people for so few jobs, employers can be really picky.

Man that sucks :(:( Sorry to hear the news :(
David's advice is very good and it worked for me in the 1980s when there was a very high unemployment rate over here. Nobody would give me a start even though I had impeccable references and credentials. They always said I was over qualified and would leave as soon as the job situation improved. I walked around all the factories near my area and because I am an Electronic Engineer who also has an "A" Grade Electrical Licence, I offered to work as anything from a maintenance electrician to a production robotics programmer to an electronics service technician. Eventually got a start as an electrician and after three months was promoted to management tasked with improving automation and making it more reliable. I had that job for 5 years and considering they didn't really need an electrician when I dropped off my resume I thought it worked out quite well. The job only ended when their British parent company sold up the site to developers and relocated their production to Asia.

Keep your chin up and just continue to put your name about and sooner or later a job offer will come your way.
Best wishes and also good luck ;)

Good luck and my only advice here is to speak with a good, trustworthy accountant before you set up your business ;) I had my own contracting business for 25 years and early on learnt a very hard lesson in life :cry When you sign your business tax return which has been prepared by a tax agent or in my case my accountant, the onus is on you to ensure all information is correct and without any errors as well as all claims must be provable with documents and receipts. My first accountant although fully qualified was quite cheap and a bit inexperienced thus he made some bad recurring mistakes over a number of years and when the Australian Tax Office finally investigated him and all of his clients, the upshot was I had 7 days to pay A$35,000 to avoid an even more costly federal court case with the possibility of a criminal conviction rolleyes After they made their threats and waved the court case big stick, I :crap myself and then spoke to a tax lawyer who said pay ASAP as they don't usually give that payment option unless it was clearly a mistake and if I went to court I would lose plus then have all costs awarded against me :(
    Damn accountant :mad
Luckily I had several lines of credit and a small investment account so I didn't have to mortgage the house but things were a bit tight for a year or two as I used up all my cash reserves ;)

I hope it works out for you and remember that it's great to be the boss :-D

Yeah, I will do it the right way, starting with setting an LLC. My mom is a realtor and property manage. She has run her own business before so I can get advice.

I made more money in two hours yesterday than I would have in four at my old job. There is a a vacuum for tech support companies in one of the local towns here. Sure the drive sucks, but thats why I add a trip charge. Expand that into web design and consulting, and I think I may have found my niche. I am also thinking of starting a data recovery company.

Lucky you with advice from your mum -D When I started out I didn't have anyone to ask so I made a couple of silly mistakes one being going with a low cost cheap a$$ accountant ;) The other mistake I made was not registering my business name as a Pty. Ltd. and as a National company. Instead I registered as a Sole Trader at state level and when I became successful one of my competitors stole my business name nationally. I could still use the original name in my home state but nowhere else. Why did I do it that way? Because I was young and it was cheaper plus I didn't have much money when I started out so without good advice I missed seeing the future bigger picture rolleyes

Good that you made a bit of money and that you factored in your travelling costs:)
Although data recovery can sometimes be time consuming, it is still a great money earner and I still do it for bourbon money from friends in dire need ;)
Another good little earner is setting up businesses with tech upgrades for better IT accessibility for their staff. I have set up a couple of businesses so their sales team and managers can access the company accounting system, the company logistics system and the company inventory and pricing system while they are out on the road using laptops, ipads, iphones and android smartphones. Of course they can also do emails and anything else they can do on their PC while being out of the office so it really improves their productivity and being able to answer customer enquiries on the spot improves their level of service ;)

My friend has a business rolling out vitualization packages, server packages and VM ware to medium and large size businesses and there is a lot of money to be made in this area but also a huge amount of stress if things go wrong with the servers or software packages and when the whole company can't do any business until the problem is fixed you soon learn about how much threats of being sued for protracted damages can cost :( I was offered a partnership in this business when it was first floated in the mid 1990s but I already had a very senior position at a major international company so I opted for a happier lower stress life because in the early years of establishing the business the hours required were horrendous and I wouldn't have been around while my then young children were growing and needing a father :cool I think I made the best choice for lifestyle and family reasons as although my friend is now very wealthy, he still doesn't have any spare time to pursue any hobbies or family things because his life is the business and even when he is at home, he is always working in his home office......... he even eats all his meals in front of his PC in his office :( He barely knows his teenage children and his wife is getting fed up, although she enjoys the money he is earning rolleyes

Good luck with your venture going forward and I hope every decision you make is a winner ;):cool
If you work from home try to clearly separate work time from family time so you can still do all the family things like remembering birthdays, going on family holidays and coaching your daughter in martial arts. I have a home office too and it is easy to shut yourself away and bit by bit, slowly lose family contact ;)
