I wish we had such a day in South Africa.

 

Several of the restaurants here in town offer a free meal to armed forces veterans on November 11th.

One of my co-workers has always been against that. He thinks it's wrong to receive any kind of reward or special benefit for doing what he genuinely believed was his duty as a citizen, when he joined the Navy and served for eight years, when he was younger. So he protests by taking advantage of restaurants who don't specify that i's free food only for the veterans. Every year on Veterans' Day he arriveds at work with 30+ breakfast burritos that he share with the whole department.

We give him collective thank for his service, in the form of a signed card and his favorite coffee drink.

 

11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month -WW1 came to an end!

Veteran's Day and Memorial Day are two of the best national observances here in the U.S. So much power and leverage in American national pride and military capability. I hope the next 20 years are all about diplomacy, though. Reason over might any day!. Here's to our servicemen and those around the world...
