Hello, I have a dell inspiron 531 desktop comper running windows xp service pack 3. It has an amd processor and a nvidia ethernet card. Lately I am having all sorts of problems trying to get it to work right. My network connection is not working and I am having problem installing software completely. Every error that I get seems to have something to do with my "windows management instrumentation" files missing or corrupted. I haven't been able to repair my network yet, so I'm figuring that if I repair my wmi files then maybe I can fix my network. I've tried the wmi utility but i ready didn't understand what I was suppose to do. Please help me repair my wmi files. Thanks

Thanks major attitude! As far as I know, that solved my wmi problems. Now I'm trying to get my network connection back. Thanks again

Sometimes your best bet is to "remove" the network card and reboot allowing Windows to re-detect it. Control panel, system, device manager. Find your network card under "Network Adapters", right click, uninstall.

BUT make sure you download network card drivers first in case it does not come back. This SHOULD reset all your internet and networking settings but again if it does not detect the card on reboot and you don't get the drivers, you won't have internet and no way to install the drivers. Slim chance that will happen but I would not risk having the drivers on my system before I do it. This assumes you do not already have a product cd or dvd with drivers on it.

@ major attitude, unfortunately my computer has a built in Ethernet card. I didn't have the option to delete the card, so I deleted my connection in the my network settings. Then I tried to uninstall the drivers. That was the last thing that I could do with it. now when I go to it in device manager and right click on the Ethernet card, it does not respond. It shows an exclamation mark in the device manager. I have tried installing a wireless adapter but haven't had any luck yet. When I try and setup a network, it does not recognize my network hardware

Did you download and install the latest driver for your Nvidia card from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?

After doing that, do you still have the exclamation mark on your network adapter? If so, right-click | Properties: what is the error?

    @ pwillemer
Yes I have tried that but I think that I have some other issues going on because my system is not letting me complete any downloads. I don't know if it is a windows installer problem or because I only have 5 gig left on my hard drive. My computer is also not installing new hardware that it finds. I disabled the ethernet card from within the set up screen. I tried to install a wireless adapter but that didn't work because I couldn't get the software to install. As always, thanks for your help

In response to your question, yes I still have the exclamation mark and I don't get an error when I right click on it because it does not respond

Still need help. I have an onboard nvidia Ethernet card. Recently, I have been unable to connect to the internet. When I open the device manager, I have exclamation marks on my mouse, keyboard and ethernet card. My mouse and keyboard actually still work but my ethernet card is not working at all. As a matter of fact, the task manager keeps telling me that I have "no active network" adapter. I have already tried uninstalling but that didn't work. I get no response from the device manager. I have even tried to put another ethernet card in and have even tried wireless but I can not get the software to fully install. I have learned from reading that I have to delete something in my registry so that I can uninstall it. I don't want to screw up my registry; therefore I and trying to get some step by step instructions. Please help if you can! Btw, I am running windows xp service pack 3 with an amd processor. The computer is a dell inspiron 531 (desktop). Thanks
