While using Windows Media Player 10, I am trying to play a WAV file. I keep getting a message saying that one or more codecs required to play the file cannot be found. What do I need to do to play WAV files on Windows Media Player 10?

  2. Is this the only file that gives you the message or all of the wav files you try to play?

I assume clicking start, then Run, then typing in mplayer2 (press enter) does not work either?

Have you installed any codec files lately? Like the mega codec pack?

Do you have any other media players installed, such as winamp, real, etc?

Question, where did you download this .wav file at?

Did you create the .wav file?

Can you play the following .wav file located on your computer?
    c:\windows\media\chimes.wav
    c:\windows\media\chord.wav
    c:\windows\media\ding.wav
    c:\windows\media\recycle.wav

These wav(e) files should be already on your computer.

  7. Im wondering if windows media is corrupted. Try going to add/remove programs and uninstalling windows media player. It will not uninstall it completely just load whatever the version was when you installed the computer. Then install wm10 and get all the updates. Tell us what happens when you try that.

That is an idea, I wonder if other media files will play within WMP10 for the original poster.

  9. Or if there is no option for windows media in add/remove it probably came preloaded in windows. Try downloading it and installing it again then get all updates and get windows up to date and tell us if that helps.

If windows Media Player is not in Add/remove, it came pre-loaded, then that can be reomved by unchecking it in Add/Remove Windows components ( XP ), Download the Latest 10. Before that i would like you try this
    Open Windows Media Player
    Click on Tools
    Click on Options
    Click on File types,
    Check .wav
    Click on Apply Ok

    another way

    Open My computer
    Click on Tools
    Clikc on Folder Options
    Click on File types
    Search for .wav
    Click on Change
    Select Windows Media Player
    Click ok

Or else, Download the Ace mega codecs pack.

even if this does not work, then download some free convertor that converts wav to MP3... ( A Work Around ) .
