WMP 9.00.00.2980 won't play files

WMP opens, and when I try to load a file I get the "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. Any ideas? I'm running windows xp. Winamp can play media files fine, but I don't want to use that.





no virii, spyware, etc.

 

seems to only be video files that cause it to crash.

 

could be a codec thing, is that all it gives you? if it is
try uninstalling it and reinstalling it(or install an updated version)
if not what else does it say
does it tell you what the problem is?

 

how would I go about uninstalling it? whenever I open a video file it just says it needs to close.

 

you dont need to open it to uninstall it
find the folder
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player (or wherever it is)

Also, I'm having a problem where the video might pause (the audio still plays) or it moves in slow motion and I have to exit the player and restart the video. This has been happening for a while and it's very, very annoying. I doubt it has anything to do with the power of my computer... it's not a perfect setup, but I should easily be able to run videos fine.
