    Hi Guys
I am hoping that someone can help me out here. My mom bought a WonderMedia 8650 Tablet with the following specs.(Android Tablet WM8650,High-performance 800MHZ CPU+300MHZ DSP+ 4GB)

    Android Version-2.2

    Kernel Version- 2.6 32.9-default

    Build number-generic-eng2.2 Froyo Ver 1.5.5-20110920.043830

The problem that we are having is that this things will not accept any apps from anywhere. Not Google apps, Not amazon apps not anything. The downloads seem to take but then they will not do anything.

I have read several things that people have written about this tablet on line and it seems that it can be 'hacked' to be made functional. But ive no idea what to do or where to start.

Any help that you can offer will be helpful. Thank you

I have no hands on experience with this device but reading the WonderMedia PRIZM WM8650 product description it sounds like you have more of an ebook reader/media player then you do a computer tablet. ereaders and tablets are not the same thing.

You might have a look around at the XDA Developers forums. If there is a way to root ('hack' as you called it) the device or if there is even any benefit in rooting it they will have the information there. 'Hacking' an android device is called rooting or root.

:) Its definitely supposed to be more than an ereader. While researching I found out there are several models of this device floating about. Some sellers updated the firmware to a more user friendly version before selling. The one mom bought will access the net and let you check email just fine but lack of ability to download a proper appstore/app make it fairly useless.

I found a few videos about the subject, and on one of them the guy trying to update/switch out his firmware ended up downloading a version that caused the touch screen to become unresponsive.

So I definitely do NOT want to try anything until Ive gathered a little more information. Ive found some links where people ay you can download the proper firmware from their site. And mount it to a sd card, but Im nervous about visiting just any website and downloading strange files to my pc. (lol you guys have helped me fix things that have come from that particular road before :) Lesson learned! ha!)

Anyway thank you for the quick response! If I find something helpful I will post it here as well :)

    WR

Like I said. You have more of an ebook reader/media player then you do a computer tablet. ereaders have to have internet capabilities to find, view and download ebooks, videos and music as well as having email capabilities.

That's a risk you run when modifying the firmware on any device. On Android it's called rooting. Android rooting gives you root access to the Operating System in order to customize it to your liking. You run the risk of bricking your device no matter what instructions you follow when rooting.

XDA Developers forums. <- This is where you go to learn how to, why to and the risks of rooting. It's where Android developers hang out, share information and try to help people who have questions.
