Won't Recongize USB drive

Hi,

Suddenly my USB multi card reader is not being assigned a drive letter when I plug it in to the computer. It recongizes it, but the only way to see it is in computer management and even then I need to assign it a drive letter and can only access it from there. It also thinks that it can only use 8 letters in a file name. Is it a plug and play problem?

Did you install anything new before this happened? Did anything else change? Try plugging in the card reader w/ the PC totally powered down. Many PC's stay 'hot' after being turned off (HP's, Compaqs, Emachines, some Dells, etc) so either unplug the power cord or use the master switch on the power supply next to where the power cord plugs in. Wait about 30 seconds. Hit the power switch once or twice with the power unplugged to be sure everything has discharged. Wait another 30 sec or so, plug in the card reader, then plug the power back in and fire up the PC.... remember, it's a really good idea to use the 'safely remove hardware' tool before unplugging ANY USB devices. Right click on the little card-looking-thing-with-a-green-arrow-next-to-it down by the clock and click on 'safely remove hardware' and select the appropriate device from the list provided..... let us know what happens................. you may need to uninstall/reinstall your USB drivers for your mobo or maybe even a system restore to right before the problem happened.....
