:cry I am running XP-SP3 and recently upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007 Enterprise. Spell checker is working in all Office programs but Word. I have checked Word Options and Review Language and everything points to English-US. I have tried using just the main dictionary and not the custom.dic because when I look at the words in custom.dic there are only 2, but either way it simply won't spell check. I have found other blogs that say use REGEDIT and remove the override key in

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0

but I do not have that key in my registry.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions. :confused
    This is really annoying!

    Hi

    Couple of options to check

1st is to open Word and click the Review tab then click in the Proofing group Set Language and in the box that opens, make sure that "Do not check Spelling or Grammer" is not ticked, if it is untick it.

then click the Default button to set this to your Normal.dotm file

2nd is from Words Options click the Resources tab option and then run Office Diagnostics, this is a repair option

3rd is that your Normal.dotm file which is the default layout of your Word docs, is corrupted so follow this to create a new one, follow the instruction in this MSFT KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822005 from the part titled Global Template (Normal.dotm or Normal.dot) to rename your current one, then restart Word to create a new one.

I've done everything you suggested, but still nothing. I'm including some screen shots, maybe you will see something I am missing. The misspelled words do not underline and spell/grammar check is only checking grammar. Thanks again for any help.

This may help. I checked the registry entries for word and the install language is set to 1033 and the wordspellingoptions are set to 5. :confused

:major Thanks to all for the help! Maybe I can now help someone else by posting the SOLUTION (because I really don't like when it doesn't get posted). Here is what finally worked for me. It seems that Office 2007 disables the english dictionary becasue it causes problems with Outlook Express. To turn the dictionary back on in Word 2007 goto:

    Microsoft Office Button>
    Word Options>
    Add Ins>
    Manage (select disabled items)>
Click on the english dictionary and re-enable it>
    Close Word and restart.
My spell check now works fine.

    :-D

    Hi

Many thanks for posting the solution, I agree with you in its always worth even if you fix an issue yourself in posting the solution to maybe help someone else.

Didnt know that with Office 2007 and Outlook Express, likey I never come across it as I use Vista which does not have Outlook Express, so learned something new today.

    Thank you
