Word cross references changing when printed

I'm using Word 2003 and I'm having a problem with the cross references. I have several documents where I have inserted cross references to heading numbers and titles later in the document. Viewing these documents on screen presents no problem; however, when I attempt to print the document several (but not all) of the cross references get screwed up. Some of them will change to say "Error! Reference not found" and others will insert the entire section into the reference (rather than just the heading number and text). The headings referenced have not been changed, so the "reference not found" error should not be displaying.

The strange thing is that nothing appears to be wrong with the document until it is printed. I've tested it from multiple locations on multiple printers with the same outcome. I've run scans for viruses, spyware, and malware and they all come up clean. I've run windows update and the problem persists.

Any idea what it might be? I know that I can go in and re-insert all of the cross references to solve the problem, but since there are several documents with hundreds of references each I'm reticent to do this unless it's the last resort. I've searched on the basic key words and I haven't found any references to a similar problem.
