I have more than a few Word docs that can't open for some reason. When I try, the language converter comes up and asks me which one I want to choose, but shows code (squares and such) in the preview box. They were written about a year ago (all in English) and seem to have gone corrupt. I don't know how to attach a file here to show you - but if there is anyone out there who is interested in me sending it to them to give it a try - please let me know. I really need them for next week.

    Thanks so much, Stephanie

Hi Stephanie, Have you tried opening them in notepad or wordpad or saving them as rich text files?

I tried opening it in NotePad, but it was all code again (a bunch of Ua's down the whole page). I saved it in Rich Text, but it only turned the square coding into lines. Any other suggestions?

which version of word do you use now and is that different to the one they were created in?

I have files that do open like that BUT they are unicode files and ment to open that way... but if yours were a normal word doc before that wont be the case.

by all means I will have a go at working out whats wrong if you want? I will PM you my email addy.

Following on what Halo said -- do you have the same fonts in your current Word version that the docs are saved in?

Same fonts. The only thing I can think of is when I transfered my files from my old hard drive to a new one this may have happened. I did this about 3 months ago from a Gateway to an Emachine harddrive. I haven't used these files since then, so I just went through them all and what's interesting is that everything that's just in MY DOCS is corrupt (Word files, that is) but all Word docs in FOLDERS that I created are fine! Odd.

Hi Stephanie, sorry to be "popping" in and out today but it's been one of those kinda days. Question for you and Kodo. I noticed that in April '02 there was a Word2000 update knowledge base article here and it mentions a "service pack 2" also. Are you current on those updates? Don't know if that's a possible cause but what the heck if you don't have them, it couldn't hurt to get them. Kodo: Are you thinking that it might be a Gateway propritary conflict?

    Sorry guys,
I didn't know you responded to this until just now. The Gateway tower is long gone. I'm surprised I didn't melt it before trashing it.

And yes, I have Service Pack 2.

Let me know if you have any other suggestions or questions.

    Stephanie
