Word Footer {page} display

Small but irritating problem.

When writing in MSWord 2000 in "print layout" I used to be able to see the actual page number in the footer. Now I have to "print preview" or "print out" to see the page number. As it is, it only displays {page}.

Have I switched something off? How can I get the page number to display while writing normally?

Open word/insert/page numbers?? Is that what you are after? Or is it printing that causes the page number not to appear?

 

Nope I accidently toggled field codes/ ctrl f9 was the answer/culprit
