I purchased Microsoft home and student 2019 in 2019 and have found out that mainline support ends in 2023 and total support ends in 2025.
I don't really understand what it means but I do want to use Word because it seems to work regardless of what I do involving communication. I saw other programs, but you have to make adjustments to get Word. I'm not a fan of the cloud and prefer to work offline if I can but I understand I can't be choosy. I tried Google Docs and had little success. It was OK for the computer, but it is very difficult as a mobile device.

My question to you it is, under these circumstances, when I should do something about obtaining Word and how should I go about it? I am in my 80's and retired which are factors in my decision.
    Thank you

Speaking for myself as a retiree... my current Office serves all my needs - and I see no need to continually spend money on new editions that I have no further need for. In your case, end of support in 2025 just means you won't get any more security updates - but your Office will still function as normal. Security support or not, you can (and you should) mitigate security risks as a matter of course by keeping your OS and antimalware updated... make a habit of signing onto Windows as "standard" user (not "administrator")... be careful to not click email and website links willy nilly... and make sure to turn off your Office macroes to minimize risks further (assuming you don't use Office macroes).

Functionally speaking, apps will eventually become obsolete - esp. when standards change but you use them in collaboration with others and thus need to stay "in sync". But if -- like me -- you use your Office as a standalone program all to yourself, esp. offline anyway, then you are much less likely to run into obsolesence problems for years and years to come.

Finally, remember that MS Office aside, there are many other alternative "Office" suites and apps that will work with your office data files (spreadsheets, documents). Many are free and kept contantly up to date. LibreOffice is a good alternative.

Just reread my post above and want to state that I was speaking in the broadest terms about security - not implying that you (or anyone else here) might click links "willy nilly" - not at all!

    I agree.

The biggest threat to MS Office and Windows isn't malware...

We are retired and in our 70's. My husband is using Office 2003 on a Windows 7 computer. (I did install Office 2007 but he hated it so I removed it.)
We run Malwarebytes with full protection. I can't remember the last time it found anything on any of our 4 Windows 7 computers.

Keep using Word 2019, if you like it and don't worry about it.

I built my Asus board Z 390 Pus gaming with WIFI and it's a water cooled nice machine. I have windows 11 installed and being a disabled vet the pc is my friend so I like to enjoy all aspects of it including the recent OS. Eleven is remarkable. Even there a controversy exists re: updates. That's another story. It's my fun! TY

Like a few other oldies here I've been using an old version of Office too - 2007 in my case. But like you I want to get some fun from using my computer, just having it functional is not enough. In fact it's totally boring. So I've recently upgraded both my old laptop, moved to Win 11 Pro and grabbed this Office 21 offer. Wow, what a revelation! Computing is suddenly fun again! So I urge you to keep trying the Office offers, depending on where you are. On Amazon UK yesterday it was back on offer.

You hit the nail on the head! I do have Windows 11 Pro also and it's great with TPM and secure boot etc. I just tried an alternative to Microsoft LibreOffice and it doesn't come close. It does the job but that's all so I'm going to spend the money for a Microsoft product which I'm looking into right now.
I still have over a year oof support with my current MS product but now know what to do. Thanks a lot for the encouraging words.
