Wordpad is corrupting files

I've had two problems with wordpad rtf files becoming corrupted - one that occurred some time ago, and one that just happened. I'm pretty sure this isn't a malware problem.

Thanks in advance for help, and I've explained both problems below.

1. I have an rtf of quotes, e.g., just text, maybe a few links - and it suddenly went from being about 1,000 to 2,000 kb to being over 280,000 kb. When I copied half of it out into another file and deleted that text from the problem file, then saved the problem file again, it went up to 557,918 kb and locked my system up!!

What could cause this, and how can I recover that file? I don't have a current backup of it and would like to save it if possible.

2. Long ago, in a few rtf files, any url wound up being truncated and duplicated repeatedly. For example,

forums.majorgeeks.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=21

would become: forums.majorgeeks.com/newthreforums.majorgeeks.com/newthreforums.majorgeeks.com/newthreforums.majorgeeks.com/newthreforums.majorgeeks.com/newthreforums.majorgeeks.com/newthreforums.majorgeeks.com/newthreforums.majorgeeks.com/newthreforums.majorgeeks.com/newthre...

This occurred some time ago on several files that I may have opened and saved from other editors too, like jarde - but hasn't happened recently. It also increased the file size, as the repeats sometimes went on for MANY lines. I'm honestly not sure WHICH program caused the problem, but would like suggestions for why that may have occurred, and if there is any way for me to clean those files up other than hand editing - especially if there's any chance of recovering the original copied links!
