Workgroup matching

Not realizing my old (now backup) computer even had network configurations still in it I set up networking on the new one with a workgroup name different than on the old computer.

If I go and manually change the old computer's workgroup name to match the new computer's workgroup name will they talk OK or will I have to do something from scratch?

 

If you manually change it to be exactly the same, that will put them in the same workgroup.

Also depends if the workgroup name was ever interfering. I just found one computer was still set to WORKGROUP and it was talking to the rest of the network GRCORP just fine.

Now if I can figure out why my primary computer accesses files on the backup computer but cannot find the user/administrator so I can give permission for it to access in the other direction. Actually it finds it, but when I get everything set and click on "Apply" I get an error people all over the internet are asking about - and getting no answers: "Failed To Save Local Policy Database." (That hails from the foregoing "The user has not been granted the requested logon type," error (at the far end) which the same folks say leads to the "failed to save" error we're all getting.)

Several suggest that the "Secedit.sdb" file is corrupted, causing the save error, but it will save other setups, just not this one. So I don't think it's a corruption problem.

Of course without a user from the far computer in place there is no way to give it permissions. Gotta be an XP bug. But saying that doesn't give me access from the other computer.
