Can someone PLEASE explain the time for me?

    What the heck?

Why do they count up? That's just wacked.
Why do they have overtimes? What causes that?
What do the + numbers mean on the clock.

    :(

By the time someone answers this, I'm sure the US/ Belgium game will be over, but right now it's tie and at 93 minutes or something.

    Well, crap. Belgium scored.

See if I can explain it. If not clear or incorrect, someone else can jump in.
    1) half time is 45 minutes - full time is 90 minutes.
    2) Overtime (each 15 minutes per side) is given if teams end up in a tie. This is necessary to eliminate one team if the other team scores. If scores remain the same (tie) then there comes a penalty shootout in order to progress to the next round. I believe that happens only when going over to the next round. (very difficult to explain for me cause it's quite complex)
    3) The + numbers on the clock means that additional time is given due to interruptions of play during the game. It's up to the referee to decide (he calculates that) how many minutes are to be added.

I would need a book to write all the rules and regulations. Here is some info about soccer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soccer

Too bad that the USA didn't advance to the quarter finals.

I don't get it either, Laura.

All I do know is that, this afternoon at Pep Boys, it took 90 minutes to get my oil changed since everyone on duty had far more interest in the game than the cars sitting in the service bays. :-D

Thanks oma! That somewhat explains it. So the ties are what causes the overtime. Since the game can end in a tie, I wasn't quite connecting that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! LOL

I hope you were at least watching while you were waiting at Pep Boys. I'm sad they lost after all that.

The goalie for the US, Howard (I believe his name is), broke the record for goals saved in the World Cup. That's pretty awesome.

That's disturbing and funny all at the same time. Funny because just watching about 4 games, you realize how much these guys go down as a strategy to get a penalty called. Its really a bizarre thing.

Not if you are in an English speaking country, its not. :p

Hahahaha on the foibles of football/Futbol/Soccer etc

I see where you are coming from with the clock going up and not down, the extra time (can be extra time and still a draw or in some competitions is the "golden goal" so first to score in extra time is winner, so a team could score in the first minute of extra time and be the winner) is one for a draw in major competitions to see if you get a winner if after an extra 30mins you don't then penalties.

Soccer if I remember right was what it was called in the early days in the UK, but changed to Football at some point, need to look it up but if memory serves the slang for Rugby (real mens America Football, no namby pamby pads and helmets... I gest) is rugger and not to be outdone, Football was named soccer so rugger and soccer.

Rules are a nightmare in football, the off-side one is a pain.

A crazy game rule wise for sure.

Soccer actually comes from Association Football. The soccer coming from Association apparently. I looked it up a few weeks ago. Its not just the US that calls it soccer and yes, it used to be called soccer in England a long time ago. So its not the US that made up the term. We just kept calling it that because of our American Football.

To clarify... This type of team elimination occurs only starting with the group of 16 (teams). Prior to that it was a different ballgame and too complicated for me to explain. Next are the quarter finals followed by semi finals. Then after that a match for third place. Finally the grand final on July 13.
Yes, he is a great goalkeeper and stopped many possible goals, 16 I believe? We may see him back in the World Cup of 2018.

PS: So far I've seen all games ....... :) My brother overseas is a soccer nut and has a subscription to a soccer/football TV channel.

Hup Holland Hup!! :-D :clap:celebrateWon with penalty shots 4-3 against Costa Rica and now to the semi final. I was so nervous that I could hardly watch the game and had to walk away once in a while. They fought hard and IMO deserved to win. Costa Rica's goalkeeper was very good and stopped a lot of goalshots.

Germany and Brasil playing now in the semi finals. Germany so far scored 5 and Brasil on their own home turf scored 0 while they've played only for 29 minutes. In a way I feel sorry for Brasil.

Sort of, yes. It happens every 2 years. I think it's kind of exciting. I believe there are 3 more games left.

    Teams left:
    Brazil
    Germany
    Netherlands
    Argentina

Semi Finals: Tomorrow (July 9): the Netherlands - Argentina

July 12: Match for Third Place

July 13: Grand Final: Germany - ? the Netherlands or Argentina

So Germany will play in the grand final against the winner of tomorrow's game.

    Thanks Laura. :)

On July 12 there will be a match for third place, Brazil - Holland.

Actually not a bad place for Holland to be out of 32 countries that participated.

Holland was 3 times in the finals during the years but never made it to be #1. Not too bad though considering that Holland is a tiny country with only a population of about 16 million.

AFAIK not every country that plays soccer qualifies to be in the World Cup. Don't know how it works exactly as I am only interested in watching the World Cup.

Even my hubby was upset about today's outcome and he's not from Holland but from Spain who lost big time this time around and didn't advance to the Round of 16. Spain won the World Cup in 2010 against Holland who then won the 2nd place. So we got revenge when Holland scored 5-1 against Spain in this current World Cup, so there!! :cool

Well.... Holland won the match for 3rd place against Brasil with 3-0 in regular time. So the Dutch are going home with bronze medals. Fine with me since 32 countries played against each other. :)

I sorta feel sorry for Brasil being the host country and not ending up with any medal.

Tomorrow it's Germany and Argentina playing in the final.
