ok this is a strange one .... really stuck with it.

i just put this pc together:

    evga nforce 680i sli
    2gb ram
    8800 gts
    conroe e6600
    tagan 700w
    74 gb raptor
    decent case, cooling etc etc

pc is working fine, no major issues.

the problem is with the internet connection. it works fine for maybe 10-15 mins, then freezes. i restart the pc, everything is back to normal, for 10-15 mins again. and so on and so on.

it seems as if it freezes when the connection is being used heavily, eg, i can browse the web for maybe an hour or so, but if i download and browse, then it freezes. or i could browse the web for a while, load counter strike, and it freezes within 5 mintues of playing. all fixed by one quick restart ....

i have tried the drivers that came with the components, and also latest drivers from the web, with no luck. i have tried the pc on another connection, and the same happens, so it is definately a pc issue, and not an isp issue.

i really need some help with this, if anyone has heard of this issue before.

i am starting to think it must be a faulty motherboard, but am hoping not.

    any ideas ?

    Router or straight into modem?

straight into the wall. uni halls.

i forgot to mention that it is only the connection that freezes, the pc works fine after it happens.

i get no error message like "network cable unplugeed" or whatever. everything fine in device manager. and weirdest of all ...

if i go to network connection, and view the status of the connection, it says it is still connected, and the duration counter keeps going up. just nothing is sent or received.

Does the univ. limit your bandwidth?

i have a megabyte, and there is no download limit. i have been using the connection for 3 months on my old pc downloading and playing cs:s etc, and although it got weird lag spikes every few mintues, it never cut off.

i am 99% sure its the pc causing the issue, but to be 100% i need to take the pc home and test it there, just that is a mission.

could it be possible that the university is limiting my connection and where my old pc would spike for maybe 10 seconds, this new one is simply cutting the connection off ? ?

    do pc's do that ?

First talk to the local it department, they often are paid to help students with said issues, thats the easiest solution. Now as far as the university limiting bandwith/blocking ports and stuff, that wouldn't cause a persons pc to lock up. I have had faulty network card cause that problem, might also try replacing your network card then.
