I think I read in another thread you are into this hobby, Rikky. Only went to 4,000 feet? What's the limit of the range of one of these monsters? That looked impressive, although I thought it had all gone pear shaped when the whole thing broke into pieces. I didn't realise each section had it's own chute.

Yup nothing that big I'm currently building one now with a camera in but its slow going due to my being so lazy and Gran Turismo being so addictive, everything is made it just needs putting together.

Limit of its range?Well its got 8 N Impulse Motors and 1 P impulse Motor in that rocket an N impulse motor is equivalent to 10,240.01-20,480.00 N·s of Thrust 10,240.01-20,480.00 Newton Seconds which in LBS is 2301.21-4602.40 lbf·s, 2301.21-4602.40 LBS of thrust per second equivalent.

Now the way rocket motor classifications work as you go up one letter the total amount of thrust or impulse to use the technical term doubles so as you can imagine the thrust goes up exponentially as you go higher up the alphabet.

Although a P is two letters higher than N a P motor is actually 4 times as powerful 18,409.64 LBS of thrust per second equivalent and a Q which is the most powerful amateur rocket motor I have seen made is 8 times more powerful than an N 36,819.28 LBS of thrust or 16.7 metric TONNES of thrust for a full second.

That rocket had 25.1 metric TONNES of thrust per second equivalent thrust,it was just too damn heavygrin

The limit on height well there's no limit you can send one as high as you want to as long as you can get a license for the launch and proper certificates for the motors, your also not allowed to put any guidance in them as it breaks International weapons treaties :-D which is a shame really because most of the time they just veer off sideways instead of continuing vertically.

Many amateurs fly rockets 10-20,000 feet all the time 4 miles or so, some using 3 stage Air start M motors go up to 50-60-000 feet,an amateur team has recently put a rocket into space.

Its hard to take stock of the size of it,it looks like a little model rocket but its actually 36 feet high:eek that's 10 feet higher than our house, there's a shot there that shows men stood next to it and they look tiny.

Indeed and kinda puts the spin on independedent companies being able to one day launch their own rockets, maybe carrying satelites, JUST HOPE THAT ITS REGULATED, as Hades knows what stuff could be floating around in lower orbit!

I was amazed to find out a few years ago that not only do NASA track satellites but they also track every single piece of debris from previous missions such as a screwdriver that got away from an astronaut or recently a tool kit, they are all tracked on computer to make sure they are not on a collision course with any mission.

That's a hell of a lot of physics and maths to work out,I don't know how its possible with the wobbly orbit of the moon on its axis which I'm sure can cause things to move unpredictably.
