Hi folks, my parents had XP and used a wireless router i believe it was the Asus RT 10 which was bought probably close to 20 years ago.

They now have a new computer running WIN7 SP1 and are using the same router , my mother has a smartphone and tablet that she uses the routers wi fi with but it's sporadic at best and not fast.

This router doesn't have any antennas and is probably not up with the latest standards, is it worth buying a new router for them for Christmas and do you think it will make a difference.

    Thank you

Are you sure that their router is not a Rt-n10 model? There is no rt-10 in the Asus line for routers. If they have a rt-n10, that is a pretty new wireless router.

Now the big question is, what speeds are they paying for through their ISP and what mfg & model # of modemdo they have.

Get the exact model and her. of their router, post back. You can also run a speed test at test my.net, to see what their speeds are, when no one is using the Internet, then do the same when there is a load of multiple devices using the Internet.

It is not likely to be 20 years old. The 802.11g standard was not ratified until 2003 and that's when home wireless networks started taking off.

If the current wireless router is not 802.11n, then they could probably benefit with a new router (assuming they have decent bandwidth from their ISP).

If they use both 11g and 11n devices, I would get a "dual-band" simultaneous router like the Netgear 3700. I have the 3500 predecessor to this and have had no problems.
