Worth upgrading from Athlon 64 3200+ to 3700+

Hi all,
This is my first post so...
I have a Socket 754 motherboard (Asus KV8 SE deluxe) with an Athlon 64 3200+
processor running at 2.2Ghz and 512Kb L2 cache, and 1Gb RAM. The fastest processor available for this board is the 3700+ running at 2.4GHz and 1Mb L2 cache. My question is how much of a speed increase would I see with this upgrade? Some of these processors are available on e-bay, both new and used. I do a fair amount of video editing so a speed increase would be useful. I've just bought a laptop so any major upgrades of motherboard, processor on the desktop are out for a year or two!

Up it by 200mhz? I don't really see the point, especially as socket 754 is being warped away for the AMD 64bit range - I was annoyed at this after I bought my 754 3200+ last year.

I'd splash out for socket 939 if you want to stay 64bit, that way you're ready for more upgrades in the future without having to change your board.

 

I agree with mcadam, not worth it,another gig of ram may be depending on the size of your editing jobs and the amount of simultaneous jobs you have open

A new harddrive would also give your system a nice performance improvement as most of time your waiting for the harddrive to write the files to the memory

You usually need at least a 40-50% increase in CPU to notice an improvement.


If your motherboard supports RAID0, that will help with video editing.

If not, you can buy PCI RAID controller cards.
