Would a port replicator bypass AC input jack?

I have a Gateway 600YG2 laptop that has an internal short in the power supply. The AC adapter is fine. It's likely that the fix is a new motherboard (don't think I can get a seperate power supply).

Does anyone know if using a port replicator -- which has it's own AC input -- would bypass the one internal to the PC? The difference is $180 vs. $400!

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    jlars

Welcome to MG. Check out http://www.mundocorp.com/ for everything Gateway. Parts and support for all models, are good there. Bazza

PS: At a rough guess, I think you will be out of luck, but mundocorp will help you. Baz
