I have the hard drive from my old computer, and would like to know if it's possible to retrieve any data from that drive? I know there are places that you can send the drive too but, are there any other options?

Was the HD damaged or faulty? Laptop or desktop drive? I'm trying to figure out if you have tried to add it as a secondary drive to a desktop to see if any data is immediately readable.

    Hi

Yes, so long as Sach2 mentions above in that the hard drive is not faulty and is still in working condition, if you can add that drive as a slave to your master hard drive in your PC, you can use a file recovery application like Recuva to see what you can recover.

No the drive was not faulty or damaged. My friend had given me a newer one and in this small place I live I didn't have the room to store my old one. I took the drive out.

Great then if your PC has space add it back as a slave drive to the master one if its an IDE drive ( dip switched on back will highlight where the small jumper needs to go ) if SATA then plug it in and your away.

Then you can access the drive and if needed use recovery software to get to the files, but if not damaged then you should just be able to access the info fine.

If you come up with a security error in that you dont have permissions to access the data on the drive and your using XP then follow this to take ownership of the drive http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

So basically you are in good shape. You shouldn't need recovery software.

You are just going to open up the case and look for a bay/slot to slide the old HD into and connect it. It should be recognized by your Operating System and you will be able to see all your old files. If the old drive is IDE type you will have to change the jumper settings on the back of the drive to Slave setting for it to be recognized.

If you need more information about the process, let us know the manufacturer and model of the old HD and if new drive has the same type of connections on the back.
