I just bought my parents a new router for Christmas, and am trying to set it up. Previously I hadn't bothered with security, as with 802B it hadn't really been neccasary, but with G it reaches out farther.

So the problem is that I have an older computer in the house that runs XP, but doesn't have any of the updates (while I have a legal copy for the computer (bought through Gateway), it was lost years ago unfortunetly, and I refuse to buy a new 200 dollar copy of Windows when Vista comes out soon)

Hence, I can't use WPA encryption because that computer doesn't support it, only WEP...and it is confusing me...

So my problem is solved in one of two ways: Is there a good way of getting WPA encryption support through xp without SP1, or how the crap do you use WEP, as the router is talking about 64 bit or 128 bit or something, and the computer is talking 40 or 104 something something, and I just don't have a clue...I am fairly savvy in other computer ways, but don't know tooo much about networking.

    Thanks!

    Hi An_Amazing_Taco,
Here's an explanation for you -

There are other things you can do for security. Check this out -

As for not having the actual MS CD, if the installation was legal to start out with you should be able to update without it. You could also contact the manufacturer and request a replacement CD. (Probably at nominal cost. Should be a sticker on the case giving the key.)
    Hope that helps.:)
