If you have a free sata connection on the motherboard you can use the new dvd drive.
You will need 2 cables. a SATA data cable and SATA power cable.
    Good luck.

I now see the ribbon type air in the old one.
Only sata cable i see is on the HDD.
Where this sata cable plugs into the motherboard next to it are 3 not used sata connections.
Can I get a cable from this sata connect and up to the new DVD burner ?

Yes and you might find a spare SATA power supply from the PSU unit. If not you can get a power splitting thingy to plug into the DVD unit. It is the slot right next to where the SATA data cable plugs in.

Your optical drive, in this case your new DVD burner, is going to require 2 things to operate, power and a data feed.

If you are not going to use the molex connector (white plug) then there is no point in buying the item linked to since all you appear to need is merely a Sata data cable.

The pic of your mobo shows that it has sata ports on it.

You will then need to connect your new optical drive to a spare SATA power connector from your psu or would purchase a Y splitter, if none available.

Sorry i thought that white plug was an option, now reading your last post im lost.

I have a spare slot in my pc tower so i think i will possibly fit it there and leave the old one still connected.

I have supplied a connection photo of the rear of the new burner.
I had seen these sata plugs on the mainboard and thought i had to connect it to there, obviously i dont know as asking here.

Ok. Lets start with the optical burner first.

The bottom pic that you posted is clearly the new one as per link below.

    https://www.reclaime.com/library/how-to-tell-ide-from-sata.aspx

The other pic at top which you posted is what exactly? The old burner.
The photo that you posted (top one) is very blurry.

The item you originally linked to requires power to be fed to an optical drive by using a 'molex to sata' adapter and hence must use the molex (white) connector.

Why don't you take an overall pic of you mobo and post so we can see all the connectors on the board. Also a clearer pic of the rear of your other optical drive.

Look at your hard drive in the pic you posted with the connectors at the back. The new sata optical burner will need to be connected in the same way.

PS. I am starting to suspect that you may have a very old board which has a combination of sata and IDE ports on the mobo

The new burner has the plug at the rear as in IMG3685
The IMG3661 is a connection on the motherboard,MY HDD has a red SATA cable from it and plugs into 1 of the SATA plugs on the motherboard.
I was advising that next to thi SATA plug on the motherboard are another 3 should we need to use them.

Where the motherboard is isnt easy to grab a photo.

So looking at the HDD photo i can but a SATA cable and connect to burner then connect to the plug on the motherboard correct ?

Then i need to sort out a lead for the data side of things from the burner to wherever on the motherboard.

Let me see what i can do in respect a photo.

Ok. So you have an old motherboard.

You psu mostly has molex power connectors (the white ones) but also has some sata power connectors (the black ones, one of which is connected to your hard drive)

If you look at the back of your installed optical drives (not the new one), you have 2 connections (i) a molex power connector (white one) and (ii) a 40 pin data IDE connector (not clear on photos) but it it a broad thin cable (black in your photo).

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IDE-Ribbon-Lead-40-Pin-IDE-Data-Cable-65cm-/273528746853

If you look closely this 40 pin connector, one end of which is connected to your optical drive goes into a port on the mobo of the same size at the other end.

Usually on this type of board there are at least 2 40 pin ports on the mobo.

You board also has some sata ports on it (connected to the hard drive with pink/red cable).

Been a while since I used IDE /ATA equipment but depending on how your sata ports are configured in the bios you could plug the new sata optical drive and use one of the sata connectors on the mobo and a spare sata power connector from the psu (it has at least one since your HDD is so connected) or a Y splitter.

Other alternative is that you get yourself am IDE optical burner and then use a power molex from your psu and a 40 pin cable to connect to board. Those 40 pin ide cables have a middle connector. You would just need to jumper the second drive as a slave.

Look at 3rd pic in that listing where it shows the connectors

Thanks,i think it best to get the ide item and just swap it for the ide item currently in use

Well before you, do make sure that you have more than one IDE port on the motherboard.

The pics you posted are not clear. But what is clear enough is that you have 2x 5 1/4" optical drives already installed in your system and they are both connected to the same 40 pin connector (one is master the other slave).

So if you were to get an IDE optical burner, without checking that there is a spare 40 pin connector on the mobo that you could plug it into then you would have to replace one of your existing optical drives.

    Hope that makes sense
