this error is driving me nuts,(wuauclt.exe has encountered an error needs to close.) what would be a do-able workaround, because the error hogs the screen, with a send error report prompt, the copy of windows is legit and is a reinstall over another copy of xp pro that came unstuck halfway through the repair option, any way all I have added is avast antivirus to the original settings, anyone have any ideas.

Are you using XP? wuauclt.exe is your Windows Updates.

Try running Dial-a-fix. Just place a check mark in all of the boxes and run it. (close any open browser(s) first)

Restart the computer when it is finished and try Windows Updates. If Dial-a-fix generates any errors write them down and post them here.

firstly, thanks for the help evilfantasy, er, can I call you evil;), I followed the tip and ran diala fix and restarted, and didd it again but still every 30 seconds, the pop up appears, I was a bit brief in my query, but I have just done a reinstall of xp home edition which came as a preinstall on a 2006 medion mickey mouse computer,(yeah yeah I know, but it's for a young neice!) this did reset the machine to factory settings but the update problem was almost imediate, I only removed a preinstalled demo of an anti virus program, an installed avast! instead. would a rerun of the install be worth a go or any better ideas, including turning this off! I can't even use it right now and there is no data to be worried about.
    cheers

A reinstall is usually the most reliable way to solve a problem. You never know what new issue may pop up after fixing this one.

thanks for the help, the antivirus was not norton or mcaffee, it was "E "something or another, although I have had hassles in the past with those other two, I guess I will re-install and see what happens . or i'll have another ubuntu computer :guns
    cheers

no, I have not really been clear and I apolagise, the anti virus was called "E trust" I think, (it's gone now)and it was a trial version, however I have followed the recommended fix on microsoft web site with no joy which included deleting "wu temp" folder and "catroot2" and renaming a bunch of dll's as "old" and still getting the pop up ..so I did a reformat and a clean install of xp sp2 and reinstalled all factory loaded software( all on a an image disk) so there was no chance of me messing up, but still, I have the wuauclt error with perpetual popups so I have re-run dial a fix, and restarted and still nothing fixes this error, so I"ve got no idea how to get rid of it. the machine is a bit too old to run vista and all software is original with auth cert and keys. anyone that has an idea, please pop it here as I will try it:confused
ps should I be running ccleaner if I'm not deleting any thing?? (ill try it any way)
