For use with Windows it must be Firefox and CCleaner, due in part to the somewhat frequent updating of their programs. Today's favorite is UltimateDefrag. Tried every freeware and trialware defrag program I could find. Then today was installing, running, and uninstalling defrag programs while reading old MG's threads and saw this program mentioned. Tried it and liked it, funny it isn't mentioned on the freeware favorites page, rating is 4.8. And of course any new or updated Linux Operating System distribution I can find and get up and running on the fun machine...

Here is a good website to go to check out freeware: http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/

First and foremost, I'd like to mention Linux. I noticed another poster with the same sentiments. The linux world is an oasis of freedom. For the windoze users...here goes.

    My personal list:

    Firefox> browser
Filezilla>ftp client for web development and server file transfers
Free Launch Bar>Took me help from a geek to configure, but use it all the time
    Virtual Clone Drive>for mounting ISOs
Pidgin>IM client that combines seems like every im client under the sun into one
    Open Office> Free office suite
The Gimp> App that works a lot like Photoshop
Free Download Manager> To speed up downloads by creating multiple connections.
Codestuff Starter> A startup manager with more options than running msconfig

A couple of open source web development tools that I stumbled upon

    Kompozer & Bluefish

I can't remember how well they render the code, but those just doing wysiwyg wouldn't notice that kind of thing. Wish they would port a free version of Quanta Plus to the Windows side. I see it's available for the Mac.

    Customization:

Icon Tweaker> Freeware for changing icons. I originally wasn't thrilled with the default icons provided and stopped using it. I found Buuf icons, mac icons and vista icons recently and am happy as pie with it. Figured out that all you had to do to install the icon sets was to drag the file into the window of the app. Pretty sweet!

Logon Studio by Stardock> Change your default login theme. With some digging, you can find some really nice login themes at wincustomize.com

    Object Dock by Stardock
    > A dock app that gives you something similar to what is on the mac platform. I like to use these on kid's desktops, and systems that I customize to look like a mac, lol!

(Stardock seems to have hidden the free stuff lately, so I had to recently do a google search under the app name to find the download spots)

I also use the uxthemes with the theme patcher, but you guys might not approve of something like that. I recently pimped out a system's user account desktops. I made one look like a mac with the mac icons, cursor sets and theme put the start menu (panel) at the top and the object doc at the bottom - the other looked like vista with the aero cursors and icon sets, the third had an earthy theme with the buuf icon set.

Hey I never noticed that area. Always go to the forum spot. I love Maxthon on the windows side. I love firefox too, but like to point to my download location when I download files. I used to use trillian, but like pidgin much better. Trillian used to be buggy, but they seem to have cleaned that up over the past 2 years or so. That was back in my dialup days too. I think I'm fond of the little penguin. ;)

I'll have to check out those spam fighter apps. I have a year's subscription to Cloudmark. When that expires I'll check those out. Also could recommend it to others.

    Hi

    Avast ~ Antivirus
Spywareblaster ~ non running block for known spyware infested sites, good prevention.
CCleaner ~ cleans the junk off your PC
CDBurnerXP ~ good free CD/DVD burner app, great alternative to Nero
    ImgBurn ~ ISO burning app
    Audacity ~ Music editing app
AM Dead Link ~ great app for testing if your bookmark links are still live or not or been redirected so you can fix.
DoPDF ~ a small application to allow you to print a file to PDF format.
    Filezilla ~ FTP app
FlexTK ~ A File and Drive managment tool
Opera ~ Alternative browser to IE and Firefox (I do use a beta of Firefox codenamed Minefiield)
MP3Tag ~ Superb app for tagging MP3s with correct album cover and titles.
UltraExplorer ~ Alternative and more powerful alternative to the inbuilt Windows Explorer
Windows Live Mail, Writer, Messenger ~ Windows Live free apps for email etc, Blogging, IM.
Revo Uninstaller ~ Great app for those stubborn apps that dont want to be gone.
TrueCrypt ~ Good app for encrypting data

Are more I use but fingers getting sore typing, most of not all are available from Majorgeeks, only apps that pass for non-malware infested and are of a certain quality pass through bootcamp.
