Hello, i am a Computer Technician working a part time job
i am currently working on a Xbox 360, Im not too familiar with this kind of repair but this particular console seemed like an easy fix. any way my problem is that i just replaced this Xbox's DVD Drive it was not ejecting the cd the motor had gone bad so i ordered a new drive and installed it. a couple of weeks later the customer returned it and said that it was not playing the game but it was however playing DVDs is there some type of software or update that i might need to fix this issue? i believe that maybe the drive is not malfunctioned but just a drive meant to read DVD's and not the coding on 360 games any help would be nice.:confused

Well, to the best of my knowledge, the 360 drive is not a DVD drive. The reader is different, and the drivers/firmware requires the right hardware to be able to read the games.

It took the owner a couple of weeks to discover that? :confused

Just replacing it with a standard drive isn't going to work. I'm not 100% certain how the mechanics behind it, but I believe each drives' firmware is unique to each system, encrypting the authentication data of a game disc. This is why the drive will still read movie DVD's but won't play a game. I'd suggest replacing it with a drive from Microsoft and to their specifications and instructions. Or send it into them for replacement. All the 360's have a 3 year warranty now, and a faulty drive could be covered under that.

Should've replaced it with an official certified drive, not just any old one.

No, they do not all have a 3-year warranty. They have a standard one-year warranty for all hardware failures/manufacturer's defects. The free 3-year warranty is only is your 360 displays the red ring of death. For any and all other issues the one-year warranty applies, and they will charge you for repairs after that.

Unless you have modified or attempted repair against their specifications, in which case you're f---ed.

Sounds to me like the original poster was wise enough to get the MS drive, but failed to get a drive identical to the one in the system. It was a common trouble with the original XboX's. Three different manufacturer's and only one of them worked consistently.

Im just throwing this out there. But from my knowledge of flashing my xbox 360 before selling it and buying a ps3 is. There are 3 kinds of xbox 360 drives out there. The Phillips, Hitachi-LG, and Toshiba-Samsung. These each have multiple firmware version like MS23, MS25, MS28 and many more based on drive. If you replace a 360 that has a Toshiba MS23 then you need to replace that drive with the same firmware.

Here is some info based of the drives and stuff: http://llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_360_DVD_Drive_Comparison.htm

    Hope that helps.
