P.S. My xbox is modded and its trouble is reading dvd-r discs.

    Any help will be appreciated!

some dvd's that you can't play on an xbox is because its not a dvd player
    its a computer(more or less)
there are dvd's that wont play because of coding and what not

now burned discs are ecpessialy troublesome anyway
can you play any burned discs?

I have only tried one myself
it did not work so I just bought a dvd player

    and define "modded"

Yes, you can get a better dvd drive for xbox.

There are 3 different versions - Thompson (worst), Phillips (good), Samsung (best)

To find out which one you have go here - http://llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_dvd_version_comparison.htm

Chances are if you are having problems, it's a thompson. I have one and it's starting to die on me. If my box is cold I get dirty disk errors. Whenever I get some extra money I'm going to buy a Phillips. I don't have a modded box though, just some case mods. Since your box is modded, you might want to look into the Samsung.

Llamma.com has some very informative articles and also check out xbox-scene.com.

    Hope this helps.

actually xboxes come with a dvd feature, you just have to buy a remote to use it. Ours plays dvds fine, but i'm not sure about dvd-r's.

Modded means he installed a chip or extra software on it to enable it to preform different actions, there's even a version of linux for xboxes.

Modding the Xbox voids your warranty and may be illegal. I imagine this topic might be off limits on these forums.

Modifying the Xbox is legal, though unsupported by Microsoft. Illegally copying the games is a different story, though I suppose the mod chip that allows one to play them is a gray area.

Actually, I could be wrong, but I think reverse engineering (modding) the Xbox is a violation of copyright laws.

Xbox drives are Xbox specific. You can't just buy a pc dvd drive and it work. There is a mod you can do to an off the shelf samsung, but I don't think it's very easy to do.

I'll have a look around and see if I could find the tut on how to do it.

If you want a samsung it's not going to be cheap. They have thompsons on ebay for around $25-$30, but I can't say many good things about them.

definitely go for a samsung, you will see better performance and games load faster. also the modd chip does not void you warranty but you won't get any surpport for it, as mentioned earlier.
i've never been able to play dvd r's through my xbox but can on my ps2 for some reason, bizarre but then again my xbox isn't chipped, neither is my ps2 before you wonder to yourself!
but yeah, samsung all the way :)

there are companies out there that will solder anything together for you, friend of mine works for one in fact. they're always having customers send in ps2's or xbox's for replacement drives, or modding chips etc. so as nigneil146 said, it can be done, but only if you know what you're doing.

Hardware modifications void both the Xbox and PS2 warranties. The newest PS2s play both recordable and rewriteable DVDs and CDs out of the box (the older ones like mine and yours won't play rewriteable discs) and Microsoft has no plans to support recordable discs (to combat piracy in general, I heard) http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/hardware/Errmsg-MakesurediscXbox.htm .

It's perfectly legal to replace the drive on an XBox, but it would void your warantee. You can get MS to give you a replacement I believe, but it would cost the earth.

Mod chips on ANY console will void the warrantee, as it doesn't constitute a repair (the title gives it away : MOD chip)

It also states that any "Act of God" will also void the warranty. . .

    page 18

if you even open it it voids it within the three month period , if you are still under warrenty, have the extended one, or plan on calling Xbox to fix whatever(they might offer a new warrenty) leave it be

but that "ACT of God" is open to inturpetation

Deterioration of a drive would not pass as an "Act of God". However if your house was spontaneously flooded while you were out and broke the XBox, that would void it.

In this case, I would get one of the drives mentioned earlier and replace it yourself.
