Xcopy Problems

  1. Hello again,

This really isn't a big deal because I can do it many other ways but I want to figure out how to do it this way. I have a USB that is a Bootable Windows 10 64-bit/ 32-Bit that was created through the creation tool. I wanted to transfer all files to another flash drive because I don't need 16GB for a Installation drive. So I got a 8GB flash and plugged both of them in. I opened up the CMD in admin and formatted the drive with the commands and switches. I got to where I typed (xcopy g:\*.* t:\ /e /h /k)

It works all the way until it gets to the system information file where I get an access denied message and the transfer stops. I did it again on another flash drive but i get the same message. So I tried to do it with out the hidden files switch and it worked but there are 3 hidden files that I think it needs. Like I said this isn't really important, I'm just curious if anyone has ever ran into this before. I'm not sure if the Windows 10 installation drive needs the hidden files to function but I am just asking for future reference.

Thanks all have a wonderful day or night depending on your timezone.

Please Explain i got lost here.

Are you trying to make a bootable USB drive through Xcopy.

Or simply making a windows backup.

Not sure what you are trying to do here. There are programs that allow you to make a bootable copy of windows on to a flash drive.

Try using this program below it's free to use.

Here is a video how to make a bootable with this program.

He has a bootable Windows 10 x86_x64 16GB flash drive that he, instead, wants on an 8GB flash drive. He's tried to copy the info from the 16GB flash drive to the 8GB flash drive using the XCopy Command and has run into problems.

Truthfully, I think it is easier to just create an 8GB USB stick from scratch using the same steps used when the 16GB was created.

  5. Ok, thanks everyone I'll take all the information into consideration. I've never used "xcopy" seemed like fun is all.

The only time I've needed to use XCopy was to install the Win 7 SP 1 supplement for KB3AIK. As I recall, the last four letters of the command were ERDY. I don't know if that would work for what you wanted to accomplish.

As plodr said, it would be easier to simply create an 8GB flash drive using the Media Creation Tool.

Software architecture has become so complex, and securitized that even an old DOS user like myself would just create a new flash drive.
The main issue probably isn't security related, but a hiccup in downsizing the partition.
