    Good afternoon,

I've recently added a XFX Radeon VII GPU to my arsenal but I can't get it working with my machine. Either I received a dud from Amazon or there is some sort of compatibility issue with the hardware.

With the new XFX card installed, the computer boots and allows me access to the BIOS (mobo has no integrated graphics and no graphics options in BIOS) but after the black quick-boot motherboard screen, when it should start giving me the Windows splash / loading screen, all I get is a black back-lit screen. When this black screen is present there is no CPU activity or HDD activity, NUM lock and mouse DPI is frozen, and if I press the power button on the computer it shuts down immediately leading me to believe it hangs before even attempting to boot into Windows. I tried upgrading (I use this term loosely) to Windows 10 with the same behavior.

    Computer specs:
    OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit & Windows 10 Professional 64-bit
Mobo: Asus Rampage III Formula motherboard
Old GPU: EVGA GTX 770 4GB SC
New GPU: XFX Radeon VII 16GB
    PSU: EVGA Supernova 1300 G2 (1300w)
    Processor: Intel i7-970 3.2GHz 6 core 12 thread
    SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
    RAM: 6GB OCZ triple channel

I can't attempt to use the old GPU in conjunction with the new GPU because I can't find my extra modular PSU cables to power both cards at once.

I tried DDU to remove the nVidia drivers before installing the new card but that didn't work either.

Before anybody asks, I checked to make sure the new GPU was fully seated in the PCIe slot, both 8-pin power cords were seated properly, and the lights came on on the side of the Radeon card.

I also tried my other PCIe slots as well.

Best advise I can offer you would be as follows

    1. Did you completely uninstall the VGA driver for the Nvidia GTX770 card?

    2. Boot to a Linux Live distro (USB or CD) and see whether you can get to the desktop and whether there are any issues. Mint is a nice one, though many others to choose from.

If you can boot to the Linux desktop and all works fine then this would suggest that the XFX is not a dud

    3. Post in the Asus forum in order to clarify whether your XFX card has issue with your mobo and windows 7/10.

Given that your EVGA works fine, the mobo can be ruled out

    Good Luck

    Thanks for the reply risk_reversal.

    1. Yes, I uninstalled the nVidia drivers and ran DDU to remove all remnants.
    2. Will do, I actually put the card in the mail for RMA last night so I will have to wait until next week to verify this.
    3. I actually emailed Asus customer service and they replied with the following:

Thank you for contacting ASUS product support. My name is Jhed C..

We are very happy to hear from you and appreciate your patronage. From your email, you are asking if you can get the compatibiilty list of the graphics card that can be supported by the Rampage III Formula. It is our pleasure to answer your questions.

Please be advised that there are no actual list of compatible graphics card for your motherboard since it only support all card that has PCIE 2.0 support.

Please let me know if you encounter problems along the way and I will be glad to provide assistance.Thank you for choosing ASUS.

Wouldn't have bothered myself as most have no clue be it Asus or other manufacturer supports.

I meant post on the Asus users forum. I know they had one years ago when I had an Asus board. You would get a more authoritative response.

Still, when you get the RMA back, where it to display the same symptoms then booting to Linux would be what I would do.

    Good Luck

Looks like there must be a compatibility issue between the new GPU and my existing hardware. Got the new card in the mail today and it behaves the exact same way. Tried an Ubuntu CD and it does the same thing after BIOS. Looks like I'm SOL on this card and will have to try something else.

Way it goes sometimes. Had this happen myself on various hardware.

As a general rule, especially with expensive vga's, is to get some sort of confirmation that something works prior to purchase.
